I have a 1972 fiberglass Jon boat which I got for 150$. It has had a lot of patches in the hull all ready. My question is how long will fiberglass last and how durable do you think the boat is? I'm terrified of hitting a stump and splitting the boat in two. I have had it out a dozen times do far and bumped a few stumps but with no damage. I only use a trolling motor.

Could last a VERY long time.   As long as it's cared for.   Depending how old it is -  Chances are it's glass laid over wood.  As long as the wood doesn't wrot - it's good to go.  Any repairs - make sure you patch it good so water doesn't leach in and cause it to get soft and spongy.  It's woven material with resin.  It's not going to crack like an egg on a stump.  Relax and enjoy it!

Like Jocko said, a very long time. The glass will out last you as long as it stays dry internally. Also lake Jocko said, a boat that old may have wood in it and keeping the wood from rotting is an absolute must. As long as it stays sealed in glass it won't but if a crack that has already been repaired wasn't done properly then you'll have problems.

What kind of boat is it? "Jon Boat" probably doesn't have any wood except for the transom area.

Thanks for the replies. It does have some repairs from the previous owner which I have re-patched and seems to be holding fine. Thanks for the reassurance about the stumps. And I am definitely enjoying it.
