NY State boating requirements

Hi all. I am coming to NY to fish in a couple weeks. Can someone clarify for me... Do I need a typeIV PFD on a 20 or 21FT bassboat? Also if I am only going to be out in daylight can I get away with a distress flag as oppsed to flares?

All depends on the county you'll be fishing in.  Check with the local game office or Sheriff office. I bet yes on the life jackets including a throwable. As for flairs....I like the 12gauge pistol type, no matter what water I'm running in.
