:-\ I have a '79 model Mercury and need to install a kill switch. Does anyone know what color the wire to my stator is. I believe that is where the kill switch ties into. Does that wire connect to my ignition switch?  :help:

You probably have two wires going to the ignition switch. A kill switch hooks in series with one of those wires, either one. Just cut it and splice to the kill switch.

fish_cobra....Jim may be correct, but I nexteled awesome bullet and asked him to post here.  I am not sure which is which. He is checking the schematics for ya.....as you know he is our resident engine guru...  Stay tuned ~shade

If you look at the back of the key switch, you should have three terminals.  "B" "S" and "I".  You want to tap it into the "I" circuit.  "B" is battery power, "I" is the ignition feed, and the "S" is the start terminal.  Tapping into the "I" terminal will allow the motor to turn over but not fire.  I don't know exactly which color wire it is, usually on a Merc yellow/red is start, purple is the ignition wire, and red/purple is the hot lead, but check your colors first!

Learn something every day here! I replaced the switch on the old Ranger after snapping the toggle off. It was wired in series with the ignition wire, not the starter wire. That way if it trips it kills the ignition. I wouldn't want it wired into the starter wire, though that would prevent flooding the motor trying to start it with kill switch open, lanyard flung somewhere on deck. About the time I have two or three revolutions left in the battery I remember to attach the lanyard.  ~xyz

I'll add this. All too often I'll forget to check, try to start the motor, only to find the lanyard gone. "Help me find the lanyard." to which you would probably say "Jim, I think I saw you wearing it while standing on the deck." I don't think I'll ever learn to remember to unhook it before standing up. I'm hard on those flimsy little switches, and hard on cranking batteries. It's just one of those annoyng habits I haven't been able to break.  ???

That's what I am saying, it wires in series with the ignition wire, not the starter wire.  Guess I just took more words to day it. lo

Just think of all the times you forget one kill switch...Our race rigs have two kill switches.  We do it all the time, have one hooked up but forget the other... lo

Ah, you just made me feel 20 years younger. I've been very concerned about the forgetfullness.  ;)

~c~ Thanks guys for all the info...I'l get'er hooked up and let you know how it works.
My lanyard is right beside my seat and have sat down and un-pulgged it. It took awhile to realize what the problem was. ::)
                    Thanks Again  ~c~

How many of us have pop the callin and started pulling plugs only to find nothing wrong.  :roll2:
Done that before and had my partner backing the trailer back in to put her back on when a guy at the ramp said "checked you kill switch".  ~xyz ~xyz A few words later she fired up and was good to go. ;D
