Hey guys,

I got a load of balsa cranks for free about a year ago and I've started using a few.  I had one with the paint scratched of so I sanded the rest off and I'm looking to repaint it.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START!

What kind of paint? Do I coat it?

Any advice will help guys, I'm not expecting this to look as good as the other stuff on here, but I want it to be usable.  Also, I don't want to spend a lot of money on this.  I have craft paint lying around the house, not sure if that would be any good.

Thanks,

Coach

Createx paint and etex epoxy are available at Hobby Lobby. You paint the bait the color you are wanting and then brush on the etex, for the clear. You will have to hang it on a drying wheel for the clear to dry evenly.

I'm going to attempt some painting too, except most of my lures are saltwater types. I asked a similar question on a site that has some excellent surf lure builders. The Createx & etex were both highly recommended, but so has been regular shake can spray paint, like Krylon. I'll be painting plastic lures, and they recommended some products specifically for plastic but some of the guys said they use shake can's on wood too.

I've made fly rod poppers with balsa, and the only thing I would do to prep for painting was to sand them & use a primer. I don't get too fancy with paint, just a basic color & some eyes. I coat my poppers with epoxy too.

I used an acrylic craft paint, and primed them with 2 coats of an acrylic wood primer I got at a local hardware, and a light sanding between each coat. As long as what you use is compatible, you should not have a problem. In other words, make sure your using the same type of primer & paint.
