I have a question.  A buddy and me will be fishing a tourney and want to scout it out a few days in advance.  I read in KVD's book that he will sometimes rent an airplane to fly over and take notes.  Barring that, what are some other techniques guys use to pre-fish a lake before a tournament.  Especially if it is a new lake and a good size at that (I.e. Kentucky Lake in May).  For example, you said in one article "studying a map will help me eliminate water before I get there."

What do you look for to help eliminate possible unproductive water?  Assume we know nothing about water characteristics
There is nothing like sharing any moment outdoors with someone special!

This is a great topic and I'd love to see you copy this and make a new post in Dock Talk. Lots of folks will jump in with great ideas on how they look at a new lake. I'll be here most of the day so copy and paste that over to Dock Talk and I'll jump right in.
