Mike usually a lot of lakes are ice out by now. This rate maybe April.  Candlewood should be open before ice any lakes around my way.

Mike Cork

Well I wonder what they are going to call the weather phenomena this year  :roll2: The winter in the south was very mild and short but the one up north seems to be going long. :'(

Mike in my area they have said that its the 4th most snowiest winter in the history.  We have also been way below the normal temps for this time of year.

Mike Cork

That figures, I have met all these great folks from up north and I can't wait to see them start fishing but NOOOO it has to keep snowing lo Just my luck. Look a me complaining because you can't go fishing, am I horible or what :roll2:

BASSMANNNNN

~rainAhhh The sound of that sweet sweet rain. The rain is as we write, melting away our frozen nightmare.

The ice report is that the Squzntz causeway is now melted. The bass are still deep but on a slow presentation are your to catch.

BASSMANNNNN

Lake Candlewood is now clear of all ice, though closed until the 16 of April.
Tournaments Start on the 16 and continue on through out the season.
Spawning is just about starting, and sight fishing is a possiblity in some areas.    ding-dong  winters  gone!!

Well, I came over to the good ol' US of A and fished the tournament last weekend. Great fun. Fridays pre-fishing was best for me with both a smallie and a largemouth of over 5lb on spinnerbaits and another 4 fish averaging 2lb on spinnerbaits and tubes. Saturday and Sundays fishing days were poor at my end of the boat, but most of the guys fishing the tournament had a few fish with over half putting in limit bags with "lunker" of about 4lb. Again the pattern seemed to be spinnerbaits and tubes, though 2 of my fish came on wacky rigged chartreuse senkos. Sunday, despite being a more promising looking day was much harder fishing all round. I only had 1 largemouth (plus a record shaking rock basss!) on a worm, but my partner fishing at the front of the boat had a limit on rattletraps and then later bungee worms. Most boats struggled with typically the front of the boat getting 3-6 fish and the back getting 0-3 fish.
Outstandingly good fun, well worth the trip over. Particularly entertaining, for an Englishman used to 12ft boats with 4hp engines, was my partners new Avalanche with the 150 XR6 engine. That bad boy did 59.5mph when nobody was looking ;)

As most of you know I planned on fishing with BASSMANNNN on my trip up here to CT and we got out twice on Candlewood.  Absolutely beautiful Lake!!

The first day we were on the water for 7 hours and didn't catch much.  I caught a largemouth on a Creme Swim bait (same thing I use in FL.) and BASSMANNNNN caught a 3 lb. smallie (and a few other fish).  Overall is what a foggy, cool, breezy day.  Not the best for fishing, but I had a great time with BASSMANNNNN.

Saturday a.m. I met up w/ my brother and were preparing to fish Candlewood from shore and guess who strolls in off the Lake - - - - BASSMANNNNN ~c~

He took me and my bro out for a few hours and I caught a largemouth and 2 smallies and boy were they small.  I caught the LM on a micro munch senko, wacky rigged in road kill color.

The 2 smallies came on a Blue Fox in-line spinner #3.

Overall the fishing was fair but the time fishing was awesome and I'll promise you BASSMANNN knows his stuff.  If you're ever up in the southeastern part of CT look him up - he'll take good care of you!!!

Mike Cork

That's awesome, Thanks Bassmannnn for hooking Fish For Free up. It's great to see folks from the forum meet up and get some fishing in ~c~

BASSMANNNNN, It's tme to play all over the state. Fishing should be good for the next few months everywhere. I've never fished Candlewood, but will this year for sure.

With the mild winter we're having up here in CT, there is still plenty of open water.  There was a tournament on Candlewood on Dec 30th.  The winning bag was 17.35lbs. of, second was 15.72lbs, and third was 15.41lbs.  Not too shabby for late December.  If the weather remains as it has they're planning another for Jan 13th.

Nate

i just fished a tournament there this weekend.  We didn't do so  hot, but it was the first time fishing there.  The water temp was 60-63, saying they should be ready to spawn, but don't tell the fish that.  The boats that placed well caught 4 lb smallies on roadbeds in 10-15 feet of water.  We caught our limit both days, and I caught two 4 lb largemouth the second day, but not even close to enough.  I think the winners had 39 or 40 lbs.
CATCH 'em if you can
