I just spooled up with 12 lb flouro...first time I've used it. I used KVD line conditioner the night before and I let it dry.  But almost every cast the next day I had birdnest issues. The only way I could avoid it was to use a heavy lure, crank down all the brakes on my baitcaster, and thumb the heck out of it...this obviously reduces my casting distance but it's all I could do.

Are there other types of flouro lines that aren't as bad in this regard?  I don't know if I need to respool with a new type or just hope this stuff "breaks in" over time.

I personally like Seager or Bass Pro XPS.  Haven't had any of those issues at all.

what brand were you using ?  I don't use much Floro but the ones i have used i liked the P-line Halo best so far  But never had a problem with any of them back lashing  the Halo just casted the Furthest & had Good Knot strength

fisherdad

what kind were you using?

When are you getting the birdnests? towards the beginning of the cast? middle or end? That could help see if it's the line or the setup

I liked seaguar invisx in 10lb. It's very manageable and casts well.

I'll have to look when I get home to see what type it was...I hope I still have the box or receipt.

I have the same problem with seager throwing light crankbaits on a curado e5. I thought it was just me though

I also use Seaguar Invisx in 6#- 20# on all but 2 of my rods. I have used a lot of different brands and this stuff is the best I have used. It's very manageable, has great strength, and cast as smooth as any mono line I have every used. I don't use excessive brake or spool tension either. Try it and I think you will be very happy with the results.

i had same propblem with the p-line fluorocarbon and switched to trilene 100% fluorocarbon and have been very happy

Fishingfun86

I have heard that the Trilene 100% flouro breaks a lot.  Any feedback on that?  I haven't used it personally just asking to see if anyone else is having a problem with it

I've been using seaguar differant # for the last three yrs now an have no problems with this, what you have to do is while you are putting the new line on make sure it is tight while you are reeling it on to your spool.an that it is going on even.

Last time I was out I did notice it was a little loose on the spool so maybe I will respool it tighter

cd1 like anything else what might work for one may not work well for the next angler.

Good call on the KVD line conditioner,  I use Seager15lbs or if I have to Bass Pro XPS 17lbs but one trick to try if you haven't done so yet is tie the line to something, spool out the reel as you walk away and respool it under a load.  Spray a bit more KVD as you go and give it a try.  I find that some types of floro lines aren't as forgiving so it has to be on the spool real tight to prevent it from causing over runs from inside the coil of line.

The spray may have worked its way into your reel and lubricated the wrong parts that would cause your brake to no function properly. I had this problem last weekend because I got my reel wet and it would backlash on every cast even with a 1/2oz trap. Even with the brake on tight it still had problems. I had to let it sit out for a couple hours before I was back to normal. You may have to clean your reel and see if anything changes.

I havn't had any problems of break offs at all

Thanks for the insight guys.

Ron- Im gonna do exactly what you suggested...i know i didnt make a point to get the line spooled tightly...i just did like normal.  Ill tighten it up and see what happens.

fisherdad

Also dont put on a full spool of line. You'll want to fill it to where the line coming off the spool is horizontal with your level wind. I usually do that or a little less.

fulldraw84

When you put on your line conditioner try spraying it on a rag and running it threw the rag so it cleans and lubes the line as it goes on. it also keeps the excess off of your reel.  Joe
I hate hard water.

I tried flouro for the first time last year.  17lb (i think) trilene for my flipping/pitching rod.  I sure didnt like it.  Cannot cast near as far as with mono.  But i still wanted something strong and easy to cast.  I just spooled with the new spiderwire ultracast invisibrade.  Its white so i had a little doubt about it being invisible.  Man it sure works in the green water on caddo.  I love this line.  Will be changing alot of my rods to this stuff.  Cast like a dream, no memory, easy to tie, smooth through the rod eyes, great sensitivity, almost disapears in the water.  Just need to buy more.

I too had birds nest issues with the flouro.  I tried many differant knots, most i could break with my hands (tied correctly, lubricated). I also always run out my line and reel it in under tension.  I just didnt like it, was like casting a slinky.

nope two years of use no break offs ;D

Hands down Lake Fork Tackle FHP even in 17 lb test there is no memory. I can cast a little rapala shad rap SR5 which most people throw on a spinning gear a county mile lo  Before I was using 10 pound mono and couldnt get the distance with that shad rap like I do with this fluro. Now allot of other fluro's this would not be possible due to memory and stiffness. On top of it being extremely castable its super thin an super strong. Give it a try you wont go back to another. ;D

No matter which line you use, a baitcaster shouldn't really be affected like a spinning reel would. It sounds like you didn't spool the line tight from the beginning.

After tying an arbor knot onto your spool, having a friend hold the line with tension is the best way to load your line. If you don't have a second pair of hands, run the line through a heavy book with the spool of line on the other side. <--This holds the spool and keeps tension on your line.

If you are still having problem, you need to adjust your spool tension knob or adjust your brakes on your reel. Every time you switch lures, you need to calibrate your reel.

Until you go through this list, only then should you give the line a bad grade and move on. Try and remedy the problem before wasting more money.

Hope this helps your situation.
