I suck at using my electronics on my boat.  I have a hds 5 with structure scan and cant figure the darn thing out.  Any tips on what to look for or even how to set the sensitivity would be a help.

I use palette 6 mostly. Start off with the contrast around 65%. Sometimes I'll use the auto range but switch as needed. For frequency use 800 up to 120' and 455 over 120'.

Several years ago I was fishing and not catching squat.   Absolutely beautiful day to be out, so I spent about 5 hours idling around playing with my electronics, and then casting a C-rig to see if I could figure out what I was seeing.  Really opened my eyes and made me much faster at figuring things out.  Also found and marked a few spots that I've caught fish off of since then, including a crappie spot that has probably given up 100 keepers since then.   ~gf Also came across shad schools that looked like trees at first, but when I cast, nothing was there.  :(

My opinion is that you can't easily learn your electronics while you are fishing, and it's worth your time to spend some time getting to basic proficiency before you try to use it while fishing.

I agree with Catfan. Seat time will do alot of good in setting up your unit and learning how to use it. Take a few trips with the intentions of riding around and figuring them out.
