Here is a neat image of a 6" Irrigation Pipe that shows Humminbird Full 180 Degree of Coverage in Side Imaging actually it overlaps a hair by this image because you can see the pipe on both sides. Also Down Imaging and 2D of the same Irrigation Pipe Crossing a Creek. Fallen Bridge to the Right Was not in coverage area of the 2D and DI area of Coverage.

Few more Images of the Pipe:

Here we went right over the Fallen Bridge in DI and 2D:

one of the things that doesn't get talked about nearly enough:  sometimes it's the 'shadows' that can tell an angler an awful lot as well...

DougV

They are not really Shadows they are absence of sonar returns because the sonar waves have already been returned to the unit from the item they reflected of but give the illusion of shadow. We call them Sonar Shadows but sometimes they tell more about the item being scanned or they can tell you how high a fish is suspended off the bottom. Typically fish the sonar shadow will not be connected to the image since they are not laying directly on the bottom. One of the easy ways to see and recognize fish in your images.

Like this BullShark from a buddy of mine in Australia...Boat was tied to the bank not moving

And These Baramunda that swam thru SI...

Here's Humminbird Marketing Manager standing on the Bottom...

Doug, lots of cool things about the technology for sure...I respect folks that feel HB is their preferred unit...I've just gone the 'other way' based on my use/applications and 'a better fit'...

not being sponsored by either company...just working with my units, spending time with friends HB sonars/SI...I've seen nothing, experienced nothing that personally would lead me to feel I'd get better performance by switching companies...  that's my opinion based on my direct experiences...

again, either unit is excellent...and rather than focussing on 'which company' the real winners here are average fisherman who now have access to 'easy to use/understand' technology that is 'affordable'.

Please note that by placing 'affordable' in quotations I recognize that it's truly NOT affordable for many/all...the stuff is darned expensive.

As for my apps...most of the fish I target (LMB) aren't in deep enough water to suspend a lot...so I find locating structure much more effective in locating fish...although I am searching for an image I took of what appears to be a 30" class catfish...

Coldfront, I'd love to see some of the images from your equipment  :-* I don't have any of this technology but am looking hard at it and would love to see the Lowrance versions as well. I have played with it some but never really understood it, but it's getting clearer thanks to these posts. Thank you Doug ~c~

Mike, if I can figure it all out, I will try to post some once my stuff is up and running.  According to the UPS tracker, my new HDS-8 and the StructureScan ducer is listed as "Out for delivery"...or you and Mother could just make a trip out here to fish Ivie or Amistad... :-*...and see it in action...

I was looking for an image I took earlier this spring...and can't find it...will rustle around a bit at home see if it's 'there'...failing that, I'll see what I can do this weekend...(and again MIke, thanks for getting me back on track...)

Triton Mike

Cool.  I say we start another post and compare brands.  I think it would be a cool experiment to show what both units are capable of doing.  Doug and I are fairly capable of showing what Humminbird can do.  Coldfront you and?? game with Lowrance?

Triton MIke...I'm game...figure it's a great opportunity to learn (kind of like setting a challenge to improve by joining a bass club)...

Feel free to poke fun at my sophomoric efforts...learning is more fun when it's 'fun'... ;D

DougV

I've got a few images I can share... Do it by categories like Shallow (0-10') , Mid Depth (10-50') Deep (50'+), Then we can do fish images by species, structure types, 2D and DI.

This could be really cool, I might evn be able to learn how to use this stuff I spent so much money on... :shocking:

Lowrance guys are out busy fishing...   ;D

we're not scoping out scuba divers...  patience grasshoppa...patience.

Humminbird SI was introduced in 2005. Lowrance SI hasn't been around nearly as long (last summer?)... the Lowrance guys may just be working on dialing it in. I'm sure they'll post some shots eventually.

How about splitting some trees with Humminbird?

Down Imaging View...

Side Imaging View - Covering 200' of water...and you tell exactly which side of the centerline of the transducer the structure is on....

When my Side Imaging finds me Shallow Underwater Cover like this from the Trolling Motor...

It makes it so easy to catch a bunch of these...

How about splitting some Brush Piles with Humminbird Down Imaging...

Mike...images are coming from some time on the water this weekend...would already be up...but for some reason I'm struggling with photo hosting sites...

I have my Lowrance up and running, I just need some time to play with it so I can jump in to this discussion.  I will say that regardless of the brand you choose, the technology is simply incredible.  I, like CF, have a better comfort level with Lowrance only because I have used their products more.  I have owned HB's earlier stuff and like it as well...what I am saying is I have absolutley NO brand loyalty, it's just what I am more comfortable using at this point.  I have a BUNCH of coin already dumped into Lowrance so switching now is not really an option... ;D
