My buddy found my leatherman in the middle of his yard when the snow melted last week and it had a good amount of surface rust all over it. It was bothering me so I ran down to the store picked up a jug of CLR and a pack of scotch pads. Just soak the tool for a couple of hours (overnight if its real thick) and then scrub the rust off with the scotch pad. After its all rust free just rinse it off and give it a few shots of lube. I also soaked a couple of my needlenose pliers that were completely covered in rust and they are 100% functional again.

It's really straight forward, but it works. Soak, Scrub, and re-lube and its good as new  :)
