Upper Chippewa Basin fisheries report (Price, Rusk, Sawyer Taylor and inland Ashland and Iron counties) - Cooler weather and dropping water temperatures made for some very good fishing success in the area in the past week. Musky continue to be the featured species lately and action has been pretty consistent. Slow-moving top-water lures, stick baits and bucktails have been the preferred lures and most fish have been found along the weed edges and over the mid-depth weeds. Some nicer fish have been caught on diving crank baits off of points and drops-offs and over mid-lake humps. It's a little early for suckers yet, but that should change in the next few weeks. Walleye activity continues to pick up and some nice catches of 15 to 18-inch fish have been reported. Leeches and crawlers are still the bait of choice, with a few anglers just starting to have some success on minnows. Most fish have been found on the mid-depth contour breaks, along the deep weed edges and in the weed pockets. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass action has been good. Smallmouth continue to be active on the large rivers and flowages and some nice 4 to 5 pound fish have been caught and released in the last week. Tube baits and finesse plastics have worked best and most fish have been near mid-depth cover. Largemouth bass continue to be found near and in thick cover in the 2 to 5 foot depths, with top-water and plastic baits being the most successful. Panfish action has also picked up in the last week with crappie, perch and rock bass providing some very good catches. Crappie have been found over and near woody structure in the 4 to 8 foot depths and perch have been found in 3 to 5 feet of water within the wild rice and bulrush beds.
