Here are some simple tips on how to keep your line fresh:Any time you catch a big fish or get a temporary snag take the last couple feet of line and run it through your lips or fingers. If you feel a knick cut the line and retie your lure.
When tying a knot make sure you lubricate the line with saliva before tightening. This will make a much tighter knot.
Pass a Q-Tip through the guides of your fishing rod from time to time. If any of the cotton material gets caught in the eye then that guide needs to be replaced. If not it could damage your line.

One might be cautious about running line near the mouth if the lake you are in is prone to algae bloom (which is toxic).

I tend to use my fingertips instead of my mouth on this...given some of the stuff out there like 'blue=green algae' and e.coli...

but old habits do die hard...and I still find myself slobbering on knots...   ~b~

on the other hand, should you suffer from 'compaction of the lower intestine' this just might grease the skids... :shocking:

I am with Bassthumb & coldfront on this, use your fingers to check for nicks. I use reel magic to cinch the knot down better to be safe than sorry.
