Hi guys,

After one too many close calls I've come to the conclusion that I WILL END UP IN THE DRINK if I continue to stand on the very small front platform of my little craft, so I'd like to add a small casting deck to the front of my jon-boat that would give me a little more purchase and not require circus like balancing feats.  So anybody know where I can get some marine plywood locally or suggestions?  For all I know they may even sell it at Home Depot or Lowes, I just haven't made the trip yet.

I figure with a layer or two of plywood, stainless steel screws, some spars for support, and some old carpet I can make a solid platform that's well anchored to the boat without adding much weight.

Home Depot and Lowe's sell exterior treated plywood. We used it to deck our duck blind and it is still holding up well after four years. It is a little heavy though.

When I built my deck I just used regular 3/4" plywood and coated it myself with several coats of wood protectant (can't remember what is was exactly). When you cut the deck to shape you should protect the cut edges.

Thanks for the replies.  I may very well end up just using regular 3/4 inch with multiple coats of wood sealer.

I've done this to several boats over the years. Be prepaired, it's gonna be heavy. Best one I did was with an old road sign and marine carpet. Might look at that option.

Don't forget about non-skid vinyl, it's cheap & light.  :)

depending on your bracing you might be able to get away with 1/2 inch pressure treated (womanized/green) plywood.  I used that for a casting platform for a  jon boat and it worked well.

For your bracing you have options of 1x (3/4"), 2x (1.5"), or 5/4 (1inch thick).  You'd have to go to someplace like Custom Built or Allen Millwork to find 5/4 x 3.5" boards, but they're perfect for this type of application, where you want something stouter than a 1 by, but not as thick as a 2x4.
