Teach them several different knots they can use.

bassadict69

Take them fishing & take the time to teach & show them everything you can.

bassadict69

Introduce them to Ultimatebass.com. Once they spend a few days reading all the info posted by other members, they will feel like a pro!  ;)

bassadict69

Give them a subscription to Bassmaster or another bass fishing magazine. There are some great articles & how-to's every month.

If they are using a baitcaster, show them how to set the brakes on it. The last thing they need to be worrying about at first is backlashing the reel.

bassadict69

Show them how to set the drag on the reel so they don't have it too tight or too loose.

bassadict69

Even if they can't get to the lake, encourage them to practice their casting in the yard. Set up targets at different distances & practice casting to the targets.

Make sure they are licensed & know what the legal limits are for the fish they are catching.

bassadict69

Start them out with spinnerbaits. They will usually catch fish & are simple to use.

Show them the proper ways to fight a fish. How to play the fish to the boat rather than horse him along & risk it getting off or breaking off.

Well I suppose the first thing was to make sure that they are legal.  Make sure they have a license if they are old enoug  to need one.

I would try and explain to them why I fish and what fishing means to me, so that they would be able to see how important it is to some people.

mgd0702

I would let them pick up my assortment of rods and see which ones fit them.

mgd0702

I would let them  choose which ones they want to start off with but probably a spinning reel.

mgd0702

I would probably tie on a crankbait if we were fishing out of the boat.  Just chuck and reel.

mgd0702

After they were comfortable with the spinning reel I would gradually try to get them using a baitcast.

mgd0702

I guess I would either go to the bait store or go to my tackly system and try and explain the different types of lures, what conditions are best, etc.

mgd0702

I would sit down and talk to them about line selection and what lines go on spinning reels and what lines go on baitcasters.  Also would talk to them about line diameter and strength.

mgd0702

Then I would sit down with a knot book and show them some different knots and how to tie them.

mgd0702

Next I would try show them the most effective ways to cast like overhead, flip, pitch etc, and when to do these.

Creel Limit Zero

I'd teach them the difference between tidal and non-tidal waters so we could decide which license, if not both, they would need.

Creel Limit Zero

I would teach them a couple of quick knots that are easy to learn and remember.

Creel Limit Zero

I would teach them how to cast with a spinning reel, and suggest they start with this first.

Creel Limit Zero

Teach them how to set the drag, and the importance of it.

Creel Limit Zero

Teach them how to set the hook when they get a bite.
