When my daughter gets bored, I let her pick out my lures.  After she picks one out and we put it on, I tell how it works and what it's supposed to due.  I show the action in the shallow water so she can see how it wiggles or spins.  Then I let her pick where I should cast it.

The most important thing I do is make it fun and easy.  This means I'm the one that removes the hooks and releases the fish!

When taking a new angler out to fish, stay away from areas that hold toothy critters...

Breaking a child into fishing is a blast and it doesn't take expensive gear and baits. A cane pole, hook & earthworm will catch them a fish they won't soon forget. We have fishing derbies each year and I delight to watch them learn the simplest basics. From there it's a matter of growth. One 14 year old boy showed up last year ready to be a derby tutor, having started fishing at that same annual derby when 9 years old. He remembered me and the lessons learned that day. That boy won a Big Bass tournament here last year, the only and youngest ever angler to bring in a bass over 5#and win in that event, the minimum size required to win. He's the youngest entrant, also. He got it on day one and nobody could catch him. He saved his $500 prize money to apply towards a bass boat.  I convinced him to go for a used bass boat, and what kind of good deal to look for come winter when they are CHEAP.

I bring along an extra pair of polorized sunglasses for newbies to use.

A great lesson to impart on a new angler is water courtesy. It seems to me the principle of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is an almost lost quality. Sometimes that kindness expressed on a lake isn't very influential towards other angers who will take advantage of your willingness to find another spot to fish, so other approaches come into play, but they do need to try to do the right thing first.

Ouachita

Teach them about sun protection to preserve their skin for many years of happy fishing. Most new anglers don't realize the amplification of sun rays, awate of direct sunlight, but not thinking about the reflections off the water.

Ouachita

Teach the principles of sinkers and why different weights are needed to do specific jobs. I forever see experienced anglers using the wrong weight, letting baits sink too fast for a bass to react to the bait, or not getting the bait down to them quickly enough.

Ouachita

Boat handling is a very important skill that practically requires training. Not only must a boat be kept in an advantageous position to reach and not spook bass, but there are broadside waves to deal with, as well as danagerous mid-lake waves that can capsize a boat or at the very least cause dumping of that new gear overboard.

Ouachita

Teach them not to hold a rod in their lap, too low, too high for a hookset. I get them started with the 10 o'clock position from where they can move the rod tip to meet changing situations. At that angle they will detect bites the best, but not necessarily keep a bass on the hook.

Ouachita

Maybe one of the hardest lessons to impart is to keep the line tight at all times when a fish is hooked, and to keep slack to a minimum when fishing. Too many times a new angler is intimidated with a good sized fish, giving it too much room to get off. How many times have you seen an angler with a bass hooked and no bow in their rod? I see it often. That line needs to be tight enough to sing in the wind.

Ouachita

Teach them not to follow other anglers along a shoreline using the same type bait the guy ahead is using. Many anglers go to a bait they see a successful angler using. Mistake. That guy is catching the fish that bait appeals to. I've come along behind guys like Mark Davis and caught better fish appealing to some other sense. Of course, he doesn't leave many candidates to trick into biting, but he'll surely leave some that were not convinced with his offering. Almost any selection would be better than using what went before.

Ouachita

On and immediately after busy weekends and holidays when lakes are pressured teach them to keep an eye out for places other anglers pass over, like boring plain-jane gravel shorelines with no visible cover, and launch ramps. Bass tend to gravitate to the quietest areas relatively free from a hail storm of familiar baits. Once the lake settles down they return to business as usual, feeding in the best looking, hardest to get to spots like dense brush piles.

Ouachita

Fall fishing is coming soon and bass will be herding baitfish up in cove ends, also breaking on open water schools. Teach them about tossing a spoon past a break, letting it sink and swim under the baitfish to come through the bass below. Show them the value of not chasing every break, but to stick around near the last one. No surface activity doesn't mean they moved off. They usually just go deeper. The baitfish were there for a reason, probably finding lots of forage, so won't typically swim way off just because 20 bass are pestering them.
