I would also teach them about the wind and the moon and how it affects the fish.

Fishaholic

I'd explain the values of patience and the values of being stubborn

Fishaholic

I'd try to start them out on spinning tackle and show them the various types of casts that could become helpful

Fishaholic

I'd try to impress upon them the value of fishing structure...and what structure meant.

getthenet

I would teach them to use a computer so they can get all kinds of info and to be a member of Ultimate Bass

Fishaholic

I'd do my best to get them to register as a member here and to ask as many questions as they possibly could.

Fishaholic

I'd steer them to the periodicals section of the library and tell them to read as much as they could possibly absorb about bass fishing

getthenet

teach them how to use a scale and to take pictures of the big one

Fishaholic

I'd suggest that they come fishing with me a few times for some "hands on" experience

getthenet

teach them how to drive a bass boat and how to use a trolling motor

Lipripper

I would tell them to not get descouraged when they miss a Bass when it strikes at their lure and they don't catch it. It happens all the time just keep on chungong it back out there. ;D

I would teach them that all fish are important to the ecosystem and all have there place. Proper fishing handling would be important. Most of all I would show the hook line and sinker the way basic core of fishing. Then praising them in what ever they catch, so they don't prize anyone fish over another. All fish are fun!!
The first time I would tie all lines and set them up and show them how to do easy casts.

i'd keep it as simple as possible, maybe start fishing with bullheads so they get that one after another feel.

when fishing with kids bring plenty of snacks and things to do to kill slow times. Let them reel the ones in you do catch so they get the excitement.

Ouachita

I keep a few topo maps of Ouachita to carry with me, and resell them at cost to anglers having no clue where to start fishing. One of the most valuable lessons they can get is learning how to use a topo map. Shoot, lots of seasoned anglers can't do that, yet it's a basic skill. Start by pointing out places where the elevation lines are very close together, especially next to long main lake points and creek bends.

I use snap swivels on the newbie rods so they can try lots of lures.  It helps them understand how the different lures work.  They can also see which ones catch fish better than others.

Take the time to help them figure out what is the right set up to fish in the course of the day.

Lipripper

If they have a map of the lake they are going to be fishing look at it with them and point out a few spots to try and tell them what and how to try that spot.

SO far, I've skipped all the knots, I just want to get my daughter and mom fishing!

I like the Shimano Quick-Fire II spinning reels.  Not much easier to cast than that reel.
