First find out how much experience they have with different types of rods and more important reels and what kind.

getthenet

they need to learn about line, and hook size.

procrafty

never give a first time fisherman a bait caster, it may be there last time fishing, try a spincaster or spinning reel.

getthenet

getthenet

also teach about holding a pole, and how to cast.

procrafty

show them how to walk the dog in the morning, how to flip a jig,and work a worm on the bottom

getthenet

also how to hit that target, this takes lots of practice!

pipewrench

give em an ultralight set up and a small beetle spin , thats what i started on and i'm still fishin

Fishaholic

First and foremost, I'd teach them the value of learning from their mistakes...and probably intentionally make a few myself to illustrate the philosophy

Fishaholic

I'd explain the principles of PMA to them and the values in using it.

procrafty

show them the differance between a blurgill nipping at your bait and a bass eating it, tell them to hold the rod at 10 o-clock and gently give the line a few Quick little jerks just enough to move the tip, them give it a good tug to show them a bass hitting it.

Fishaholic

I'd teach them the values of observing nature and the positive effects it can have on the success of their bass fishing

procrafty

show them how to walk the dog in the morning, how to flip a jig,and work a worm on the bottom

Fishaholic

I'd take the time to teach them 3 valuable knots: the blood knot, the palomar knot, and the improved clinch knot.

getthenet

also teach about the different lures and what they do and have patience, that's a biggy!

Fishaholic

I'd explain the value of using different rods/reels for different applications.

Lipripper

Fish don't forget the part about wetting the knot befor they draw it up  :roll2: :roll2:

Kats Rule And Bass Drool.Viet Nam Vet

getthenet

I would teach them about how to use a jig

Fishaholic

I'd steer them to 3 basic lures to begin with: a safety-pin type spinner bait, a jig, and a surface/subsurface minnow bait.

Fishaholic

I'd explain the value of taking notes from all their trips.

Fishaholic

as far as locating bass, I'd try to explain the basics of transitional and/or seasonal movements of bass

weirdlittleman

i would go to a local fishing store rather than a chain
"The past cannot be changed, but the future is still in your power!"
"Don't let today's disappointments cast a shadow on tomorrow's dreams!"

getthenet

I'd tell her to log everything so she can go back to it later.

Fishaholic

I'd discuss forage with them, explaining the value of "matching the hatch" so to speak

Fishaholic

I'd try to convince them that although there's occassions when certain retrieves work better than others, there's occassions when experimentation or something totally "wacky" is just the ticket.
