Stear them to a simple set up adna spinning rod asn reel combo and don't try and get them started on a open face bait caster right off the bat.

Remember they more than likley don't know what your talking about when you try to explain how to do a slow roll a spinner baite or burn a buzz bait so be sure to use words they can understand.

I would explane that "most" lures are designed to catch fishermen and that you can catch bass on a corncob , if you present it properly......

Well this is a difficult one for me as im still a beginner myself but now that i got my first bass (this weekend) i might as well talk about what i learned.

This weekend i went to a nice lake in PA and caught my very first bass. I stated out trying one of the basics of fishing, trolling. We rented a boat with an electric motor and went up and down the lake using mainly spinnerbaits (i cant say what brand b/c they were $1 walmart special  ;). We just droppped em in or casted out a bit and let some line out and then drove. Unfortunately, troilling did little to entice a fish (i blame it on the time of day, mid afternoon i hear is not the best for fishing).

We got tired of our lack of success and i finally learned something. Instead of driving in the midd areas of the lake, we cut the motor and steered over toward the shorline. Once there, i cast a buzzbait toward some overhanging trees and immediately, a small bass darted from the depths and grabbed the hook. It's too bad that at this point we had to return to the boat rental place because our hour was up. I would have liked to try my new found success out some where else

So, to the point. I would tell a beginner (like myself) that bass like to hang out near the shore and that buzzbaits are definently one tool to catch them. I would also tell them not to get too discouraged, i know waht they are going through (first actual bass in many many attermpts). Finally, i would let them know that even if their bass is small and they may not be winning free gear giveaways, finally catching that special fish makes you feel like a winner anyway  :)

I just remember how I learn by making mistakes! Take it slow get out there and watch, listen, and try.
