I've been teaching my 6yo daughter to fish.

I found that a cheap spincast combo is NOT a good way to start.  The reel is crap and it doesn't work right so my daughter got frustrated.  Switched to a better spincast reel and now she's happy.  She can actually cast were she wants and the reel brings in the line the way it should.  I wish I had just bought a $18 Berkley baicast rod and $14 Shakespere reel all along!

I also start my daughter with surface lures so she can see how the lure moves when she tries different things.  I show her how to the basics, then tell her to try her own ideas.  Guess what?  Usually her ideas for retrieving the lure work better than mine!  She can catch fish on an ugly, flo. orange  Hendon Lil' Torpedo surface lure that I have never caught a single fish on!

If i was teaching a younger child, i'd start them off with live bait first like night crawlers and let them catch a few bluegill to get them used to casting and reeling a fish in. Also to keep them intrigued because bass fishing can be slow at times, i'd let them work their way up to bass fishing. I think it would make fishing more fun to them because young kids can loose interest fast if they don't catch anything.
Eat........Sleep......... FISH!!!

Basser

take new anglers to small lakes or even large ponds that you know will produce some fast and furios action and you will be sure to hook them for LIFE:):)

River Pro

i'd first teach them how to use crankbaits and spinnerbaits, which can be fished with a basic cast and reel technique. I'd let them work up to baits like a texas rig worm or a jig which require more "feel"
Eat........Sleep......... FISH!!!

River Pro

Teach them safety first. Always wear life vests and keep a first aid kit close by.

Teach them to drive the boat, maintain the boat.  It can save your life, it can lengthen your boats life.

If you meet a new angler on the water or at the dock learn to take the time to SHARE your knowledge of how, where, and what to use so that person has a positive experience...they will be happy and it will be rewarding to you to have helped someone have a good day on the water:)
