Eventually, the new angler will move into baitcasters, spinning reels and even more techniques.  The bait monkey will have a new junkie and will be pleased!

Helping someone out in a tackle shop would be great.  If they were local and were willing, I would work with them on getting what they needed for the current season and would actually set up a time to meet with them later on to get more things for the coming weather changes of fall, then winter if winter fishing is possible, then spring, etc.

Of course, I would have to invite them out for a trip if they wanted to go.

If we were taking the boat out I would try and teach the basics of boating safety, like life jacket and kill switch.

clubber

I would try to teach them to keep it simple.

On a lake I would show him the topo map and explain why we are fishing at certain places and try to sound smarter than actually am.

elmerp

Encourage them to take a boater's safety course

mgd0702

Try and find him  a pair of polarized glasses so he can see how nice it is to not squint all day and to be able to see through the water.

clubber

I usually try to start a new angler out with a spinnebait. Sometimes called an idiot bait, but not true!

mgd0702

Show him the proper way to get a rod ready to be placed in a rod locker.  So you dont have a huge mess.

clubber

I try to impress upon new tournament anglers that it's not him against the other fishermen, but him against the fish!

mgd0702

As we pull up to a bank or point explain to him how to try and read a certain piece of structure.

elmerp

Show them some basics of your electronics (use simulator mode)

mgd0702

Encourage him to join a forum such as this one to learn and ask questions from much more knowlegdeable people than me.

mgd0702

Subscribe to periodicals such as North American, In Fisherman, or Bass master.

mgd0702

Try to show him through example boater courtesy and how annoying it is when someone cuts in front of you while fishing a particular stretch of bank.

mgd0702

Teach him how to rig a carolina rig properly.

mgd0702

Teach the art of spooling a reel with line.

mgd0702

Go through the steps of getting a backlash out.

Celliach

I'd teach them how to tie an improved clinch knot, a palomar knot, and a Rapala knot.
"But the Emperor has nothing on at all!" cried a little child.

Ouachita

I take people new to fishing to fishing club meetings, introduce them around. There's always someone wanting a non-boater to help manage  boat or just have a companion. We have lots of older anglers that know they need to have a partner in case they have a medical emergency. While I can't be available much of the time, someone in a club will often be ready to take them fishing and they will learn a ton of technique first hand.

Ouachita

Teaching a new angler to organize tackle will save them a lot of headaches later.

Ouachita

Teaching the concept of always modifying a lure however slightly will give them an edge they need to catch fish when other anglers are raining the same baits down on fish daily. New anglers pick that up easier than most of us fishing ruts developed over a lifetime.

Ouachita

Teach them to always make sure hooks are as sharp as possible, and how to sharpen correctly, frequently, and quickly.

Creel Limit Zero

Try and take them to a place I have the most confidence in at that time of the year.  Definitely want to put them on some fish for their first outing.

elmerp

Have them come to your local bass club meeting/join
