OIL ALARM on my 150 Optimax...

OK so maybe 150 is not high performance, but with more and more people looking in here figured I would ask...

I have plenty of oil in my main resevoir, very little oil on the engine resevoir...

The best answer I read said to start the engine with the engine resevoir off, and let it fill and put the cap back on... anyone else have this issue, and does this work?

Yep that's the ticket Mike, put the motor on the hose, fire it up, take of the little cap on the motor reservoir and go in the house for 4 to 5 hours and have a cold  ~beer~


LOL ok it won't take that long but dang it is slow filling back up, like watching water come to a boil.

I would make sure after its full you keep a close eye on it for a while. Unless you let the main reservoir run out there has to be a reason that it got low.

When you have the cowl off the motor, make sure you check the cap over VERY well.  I had a tiny crack in my Merc 250XB reservoir cap.  When I'd tilt the motor up and put it on the transom saver, it was just enough to allow enough oil to seep out of the internal tank.  Do you have any oil laying in the pan?  If you do, you might have a cracked cap.

What's wrong with filling the engine reservoir with a bottle/tube. I know that cap has to be real tight.

Nothing wrong with that just make sure you keep an eye on it in the future, something made it run low.

SO YOU UNDERSTAND... THE OIL TANK IN THE BOAT REFILLS THE TANK ON THE MOTOR ALL THE THE TIME WHEN THE MOTORS RUNNING. THE TANK IN THE BOAT IS PRESSURIZED VIA A HOSE ROUTING CRANKCASE PRESSURE THROUGH A ONE WAY VALVE TO THE TANK,THIS PRESSURE IN TURN PUSHES OIL FROM THE TANK UP TO THE SMALL TANK ON THE MOTOR, AND SHOULD KEEP IT FULL. THE SYSTEM DEPENDS ON PRESSURE BEING MAINTAINED ALL THE TIME THE MOTOR IS RUNNING. FOR THE MOTOR TANK TO HAVE GONE LOW EITHER THE MAIN TANK RAN OUT OF OIL OR PRESSURE. THE HOSES AND OIL CAPS MUST BE SEALED FOR THE SYSTEM TO WORK. A LOOSE CAP ON THE MAIN TANK WILL DEPLETE THE PRESSURE AND RESULT IN OIL NOT BEING PUSHED TO THE MOTOR TANK, AND A CRACKED CAP ON THE MOTOR TANK WILL RESULT IN OIL LEAKAGE DUE TO OIL UNDER PRESSURE FROM THE BIG TANK. CHECK YOUR HOSES AND CAPS.
