Ultimate Bass loves fishing reports. But unfortunately to get fishing reports you have to have fishing reports. The more reports we have on the site the more reports we will get. No one likes to use a site that doesn't have information on it. So we are looking for your help to get that information.

For today's Contest we need fishing reports :-*

Contest Topic:

Post a fishing report for August 2005. A qualifying post needs must list the State, the name of the Lake and what species then answer 3 of the 7 questions listed.

Water Temperature
Water Level
Weather conditions
Most Productive Bait
Most Productive Depth
Most Productive time of day
Most Productive Cover or Structure

(post your fishing reports in this thread, we will move them later ;) )

Now we want all your fishing reports, but for some of us that may only be a couple of posts. So, you can find others fishing reports and put them into your own words and post them as well, as long as you meet the qualifying requirements and you don't plagiarize the original writer.

There are several places to get fishing reports - Your local news paper, other fishing publications, a fishing buddy, a neighbor, a bass club, even the web. We want to get fishing reports for every state listed in the fishing reports section. So help us out and at the same time get a chance to win some great tackle from our site sponsors :-*

Note:
if you already posted all your fishing reports for your August outings, post them again but please put a note to the effect that it has already been posted inside the report post (we are going to move all the reports to their respective state and lake, so letting us know it is already there will make it easier us  ;)

Little Calumet River, Indiana - steelhead

River is low and muddy, the fish in the rivers are hard to get to bite right now because of the low water and high temps, pink and orange rooster tails have been taking the majority of the fish.

feeded ditch connected to Kankakee River, Indiana - bass

After the tough outing yesterday, I decided to try my "sure thing" ditch for an hour this afternoon. The water level of the ditch was down over a foot (that's not usually good for a ditch, unless it's a really deep one). The carp were pretty active in the shallows and all the good weedy areas I normally cast to, so I started casting a 1/4 oz white spinner bait to isolated tiny abnormalities wherever I could see one...and that was the trick, took a small bass and had a few more hits.

It was a short outing, but definitely worth the drive.

This is the 2nd time there's been evidence of other fishermen trying this ditch out, and I wish they'd learn to respect nature and take their garbage home...we cleaned it up for them, but if I ever catch the guy who's doing it, he'll hear about it from me like being nagged by his worst nightmare - his mother-in-law.

If you pack it in, pack it out!

Nature notes: saw 6 or 7 deer, could hear a turkey off in the distance, the carp and turtles were pretty active this afternoon, cardinal flowers starting to bloom and they attracted hordes of butterflies. Herons gliding overhead and a peaceful sunset.

Grand Kankakee Marsh, Brown Levee Ditch, Indiana - bass and northern pike

Had a horrific storm run through today which dumped approximately an inch of rain in 30 minutes...as soon as the storm was over, approximately 4:15 p.m., I grabbed my gear and headed out towards the Kankakee River.

Not far from the parking lot at the Grand Kankakee Marsh is a ditch called Van Keppel Ditch...it runs along the Southern boundary of the Marsh...with the heavy rains we had I knew it would finally have considerable water in it and I knew where it came to an end. Now the area where it ended had been totally dry for the last 6 weeks, but today it had 2 feet of chrystal clear water in it and patches of duckweed a great combination.

I tied on a 5" Tiki Flash, watermelon green with a chartreuse tail and T-rigged it weightless. Cast it across the duckweed first and there was a promising roll under the bait that cleared a hole in the duckweed 2 feet wide. Then I started casting all the way to the furthest reach of the ditch, when on the second or third crank of the reel the water exploded...landed a nice chunky 16" bass for my efforts....

Well believe it or not, that's all I needed and I packed up my gear and headed home...next time I'll be concentrating on another area I've targeted for a similar situation. Fished for almost 40 minutes, worked on proving one of my hypotheses, proved it to be true and came home happy!

Nature notes: say several orioles, cardinals, a wood thrush, 2 great blue herons, a squadron of large carp, watched the purple martins twisting and turning in their flight as they gorged themselves on gnats, saw a red tailed hawk on the ground with what looked like a mourning dove, cardinal flowers and swamp mallows abound, the monarch migration has begun...there were hundreds of monarchs making their way towards Mexico.

...another great afternoon on the Kankakee River!

Grand Kankakee Marsh, Van Keppel Ditch, Indiana - bass and northern pike

Saturday down at Van Keppel Ditch...only had a short time to fish, so I went to the ditch instead of the "new" spot I wanted to try...when I got there, there were 2 guys fishing the ditch with live bait, asked 'em how the fishing was and their reply was "there's nothing but frogs n minnows in here, don't know why we even bothered"...and I asked "how long you been down here?" "couple hours" they replied..."mind if I take a few casts in here then?" I asked..."go ahead, you won't get anything, we don't care, they ain't hittin'".

So I tied on a 5" Tiki Flash, red/brown with a silver metal flake tail, T-rigged it with a 3/0 Tru-turn hook and proceeded to cast it on top of the floating duckweed...3rd cast the water exploded and I landed a 17.5" largemouth...excused myself and went to fish another location in solitude...probably didn't make too many points with those guys.

Had a few more hits, but missed em all fishin' in heavy slop in conjunction with timber...then it was time to go, oh well.

Nature notes: the ditches which were nearly dry last week now have a couple feet of water in them, monarchs were everywhere, the swamp mallows are almost through now, but the cardinal flowers are taking over. Purple martins were having a field day with the gnats again today, but other than that I'm sorry to say I didn't see any other birds or critters.

...still, all in all, another great afternoon down at the Marsh!

Grand Kankakee Marsh, Indiana - bass and northern pike

Sunday, finished with the grass cutting and headed back down to the Grand Kankakee Marsh to fish Van Keppel Ditch...had a couple rises on a 5" T-rigged Tiki Flash, watermelon, but no serious takers.

Wanted to fish the duck pond, but I keep forgetting that I have to deal with crowds on Sundays   too many people fishing too close to good locations that I didn't care to divulge, so I take the 1 mile hike to the first turn of the Brown Levee Ditch to cast underneath overhanging branches and still no serious takers...so, off through the brush and brambles I go to get to a laydown in a hard to reach area that I know no-one or at least almost no-one fishes...couple casts and my 1/4 oz white spinner bait that I'm casting with a rip and drop retrieve gets slammed hard, but somehow I end up empty...no problem, I pick up the rod with the Tiki Flash and toss it right back to the same location and on the second crank of my reel WHAM! the line tightens and I set the hook! No wonder I missed the other hit, it was just a 22" northern pike...the battling snake of the Kankakee.

Got a few more casts in to other laydowns that no-one would mess with and had a couple more short hits...my guess is gills or more pike. Too many people for me to deal with, so I came home...there's always tomorrow.

Nature notes: with the latest rain storm, another wave of swamp mallows have bloomed...this warm my soul! Purple asters, cardinal flowers and a new plant I have yet to identify are blooming...the monarchs are everywhere, and a few yellow swallowtails too...yellow shafted flickers, purple martins, cardinals, blackbirds, herons, and a couple turkey vultures soaring overhead.

The sun was really harsh on the drive home, the tree trunks looked like burning pokers against the dark green foliage...it was really cool to see!

...all in all, another great afternoon down at the Kankakee!
