I have a 99 518 ranger I'm thinking about a jack plate would this help my boats speed and handling even with the built in set back :-\

It should but make sureyou get the right one for your setup....

You forgot ta tell 'em ta check his cable lenghts and angle (mainly steerin') ta allow for tha extra setback. Might make a difference in tha $ cost. Hyd. steerin' probably work without any mods...........T

Ijust recently installed a CMC 5 1/2" jake plate on my  nitro nx750 I had just enough steering cable for the set back but no extra. As far as handling and speed goes it was well worth the money. Before I installed it I could barely run in rough water and maintain control. after installing the jack plate I can easily run 40-45 mph in rough water. I also had to go to  a stainless prop witch along with the jack plate made night and day difference in performance.  Like the other members I recommend you do some research to find the right jack plate and prop for your boat.
