Be Gone, You. The Dreaded Backlash!

This is a great tip that actually works. Learned it from Bill Dance. Fortunately, I don't need to use it anymore because I no longer make backlashes.

I was just told about this trick a couple of weeks ago.  I haven't had the chance to use it yet but I think it will come in handy especially on those night time birds nests.

It does work on braided lines (5 times out of 10), but it works better on mono and floro lines (9 times out 10) from my experiences.

Here's one I'm stealing from Bill Dance. He puts a strip of electrical tape about across the spool with about 50 yds (or your farthest cast plus a little) of line out. Then reel it in. If you get a backlash it will stop at the tape strip. I tried this on my frog rod and it didn't effect the casting at all.

I'm going to have to give both of theses a try, haven't heard of either technique, the backlash trick or the tape.  Just spent 20 minutes last night cutting a nasty birdsnest out of a reeel with new 17 lb mono on it.  Wish I would have read earlier....

ive used this for years it works almost every time. and the tape is also great just remember to move the tape after removing frayed line or after changing baits a few times. learned the tape trick from a trolling in the bay for strippers you use the tape to mark say 100 feet so next time you let your line out to troll you all ready know the 100 foot mark and dont have to count. left the tape on by accident and use the same rod to throw crankbaits and it backlashed and stopped at the tape. these tricks will save lot of time when using the same rod to throw lures of different weights and not changing the reel setting because your in a hurry to cover water.
