How do you deal with summer fishing?

List all the things you do to stay cool, extra safety precautions you take, foods you take with you during the summer with the heat in mind, things you do to protect yourself. What kind of planning or preparations do you do because it is summer time?

Do not list fishing techniques or fishing styles.

We want to know how you deal with the things summer throws at you (heat, storms, extra folks on the water, etc.. ) so that you can fish, or survive the fishing trip!! If it makes your trip better or safer we want to know about it!

Fishing is more than just a hobby

The first thing we do is put on sunscreen!  At least SPF 30 and remember to reapply it every 30-60 minutes because you sweat it off.

Drink lots of water.  Soda and beer are great, but they dehydrate you even faster.  We always bring igloo water jugs filled with ice water.

We use another small cooler filled with ice water and pour it onto a wash cloth.  Put the wash cloth on the back of your neck and wipe down your arms.  It cools you off very quickly.

We follow swimming pool rules:  If we hear thunder, we stop fishing and wait fifteen minutes.  Every time we hear thunder again, we wait another 15 minutes.  Where there's thunder, there's lightning and I don't want to be holding a 6' graphite ground rod when I'm standing on the shore by a lake.

Sunscreen, yes even up here in ol Alaska the sun can beat you down, no less than SPF 30 especially by the water, the water reflects UV rays and will burn you up. :shocking: :'(

If I was a boater and had to deal with crowded lakes and recreational boaters, I would definitely do a lot more night fishing!  Homer Circle swears by night fishing in the heat of summer.  Of course, night fishing requires additional safety precautions and lots of bug spray.

Usually during the summer months, I put in before daylight, fish til noon. Eat lunch then fish the rest of the evening.  I park the boat under a shade tree and rest for a while.

I like to snack on trail mix when it's hot.  It's not too heavy, but keep the M&M's out of the sun!
