Many of the better Boating Insurance policies as covering fishing tackle and misc items.  However, even though they cover these things you still have to prove you had them.

I do two things....(1) Have a box to put all receipts for anything to do with fishing in.  Becomes a habit after a while.

(2) Take pictures of all rods, reels, and boxes of tackle.  I open each drawer or box and take pictures of the contents. I even take pictures of my rain gear, binoculars, scales and anything else I think I might end up losing.

Armed with this you will have an easier time filing for a loss if tackle or misc items get lost or stolen.

The only problem with this system is if you tell your wife one thing and she actually finds the box of recepts... :shocking:

I had a friend that after I got rob that took a video of his tackle. also he laid a new paper with the date showing so if his stuff is taken he can prove what he had and when.

There are these professional inventory companies around now that will come and inventory everything in your house and boat. They put descriptions, serial numbers, est. value of your items and store it on a disk.. So in case you have a fire/ get robbed all you do is get your disk to the insurance company.

Well, great ideas, except for one thing. What happens if the box of receipts or pictures get destroyed?

I had a house fire back in '86, and everything of any value was destroyed. What didn't burn was ruined by water. I lost a lot of tackle that was in the house at the time, as well as other things. The only thing salvaged from the house was a shotgun that was in a case under the head board of my bed. The gun case was ruined.

Our insurance company worked with us on replacement cost, but we had to haggle over many items because we didn't have proof, all the proof had been lost in the fire.

Get a good, fire proof, lock box to store valuable papers, or a bank box would be better. Store the originals, and make several copies which can be safely stored in other locations should the need arise. Date everything!

For anyone who has not had such a incident happen to them, I pray it never does! But, these things happen & it's best to be prepared!  ~read

Bigjim, one thing that I do is to scan and store those kinds of files on portable hard-drives. I also keep a copy of the same files on a back disc.

I don't think I owned a computer back then!  lo

Good idea, but my point is that all the copies & back ups in the world are worthless if they also get stolen or destroyed. It's best to keep them in another, separate location, like a bank safety deposit box. Anywhere they'll be safe & retrievable should such a tragic event occur.

If you have a fire, could your portable hard drives, or back up disc be damaged? Either by fire or water? Same thing could be said of robberies, if they break in & steal everything, and take your computer & discs too, would you still have proof?

Just something to think about!
