Just curious what you guys out there use when you clean and service your reels. I have been using HOT SAUCE but haven't used the others like REEL BUTTER etc.
Just wondering what you guys like.

I use Rocket Fuel for oil and Super Lube for a grease. Hot Suace and Reel Butter are both good oils and greases.

Mike- Since you brought up Super Lube what about the super lube oil.

Mike Cork

Good question Blake, to be honest, I so much as didn't know they offered and oil  :-\ . I buy the grease from a wholesaler and they don't offer an oil from super lube. I wouldn't be apposed to trying it though.

Mike I asked because its in a pen applicator and its pretty inexpensive.  So I figured it was just some light multipurpose oil probably since it was so cheap.   They have it at academy I know.

Well under the theory of you get what you pay for, I probably wouldn't use it on my higher end reels. But that is just an opinion that is not fact or experience based on the oil. I am just very particular of what I put on my reels  ;)

Their grease is outstanding, so that would lead me to believe that their oil was quality as well? But again normally you get what you pay for.

I find the oil to be to thick compared to others. Just my 2 cents.

To be honest I think there are better greases out there than Super Lube. Super Lube is great on things like hinges, in locks, etc. but doesn't offer the best qualities for reels, especially for shedding water. I think Hot Sauce grease is about as good as any. Last a long time and really clings to surfaces much better than most I've used. The Hot Sauce oil is quite good as well. I can't comment on Rocket Fuel as I think it's a bit expensive. The best bearing oil I've ever used is a product developed for high RPM R/C electric motors. It's called Royal Oil and is made by Trinity. I have no idea if it's still being made, but offers the thinnest viscosity of any oil I've used while offering great protection.

One of my favorite grease/oil combinations is Reel Saver made by Mil-Comm. It gives the smoothest feel I've ever had in any reel, but doesn't seem to last a long time and must be applied often for the best benefit and it is a bit more expensive than other products. Later!

blake711

cyclone I never thought about that.  I used to race R/C trucks.  I just checked tower hobbies and they sell the trinity oil you are talking about.

CHUNKY C

The HOT SAUCE oil reminds me of Marvel Mystery Oil. I also fly RC airplanes and helis and I use Marvel as an after run oil. That stuff is great for preventing rust on bearings. Hot Sauce looks and feels just like Marvel. I wonder how well that would work because you can get a large container ( a pint I think ) for like a few bucks at China mart. That would last forever.

I have never heard or seen that anywhere.  Can you tell use where you got that information?

freakyfish

When i bought my shimano symetre it was in the paper work when i read it.I didnt find it online. It was in the small print.

cyclone745

So it was in print? That's funny because pretty much any reel grease and oil on the market is better than what Shimano reels come with from the factory. Especially that little bottle of water-thin oil that came with my Calcutta. That stuff is crap and I threw it out. Later!

freakyfish

I did'nt want to argue about the stuff. If you want to use it then use it.I don't care.

CHUNKY C

Well Shimanos are good. You would probaly never have to use the warranty so I say use it if ya like it. When I got my Revos and JM's I relubed them any way sooooooooo!!!!

Hey Freaky I am not saying you didn't see what you said you did I am just trying to locate a copy of it.  Do you know what paper work it was on and what version of the symetre you have FH , FI?  I looked at fish.shimano at the maintenance manuals and parts manuals and couldn't find anything other than don't use wd-40 in certain places.

freakyfish

Symetre 4000 fi.I can't seem to find my paper work.I have had it for a while.Tackletour has a shimano rep on their forum telling about hot sause and eating the gears and the warranty. But sorry i could't find it.Mabe you can call them see what they say.

Nothing personal freaky but unless you can duplicate what you "saw" posting stuff like this does nothing to help Shimano's Reputation...

I dug all through their website and no where does it specify you can or can not use a certain brand of oil...

EDITED... Sorry for being Brash Freaky...

A Bad day on the water is still better than the best day at work!!@!!

When I wrote It I didn't know I couldn't find it again. So the next time I will keep it to my self. And they can find out later. No!You did not hurt my feelings.I would probably think the same thing to.I was just trying to help. And I'm not dicrediting no one.Thats just how it is.

Brad,

We do not recommend any lubricants other than our own. In our findings the lubricant you mentioned may cause premature wear to our reels.

I sent shimano this email this what the wrote back.I sent the another back to say yes or no to void your warranty statement.I will keep you posted when they write me back.

freakyfish

Brad,

This will have to be determined only if there has been a failure. If we find that the failure was due to improper lubrication then we may charge for the repair. It all depends on the situation.

This is what they wrote back.I apologize for my mistake I swear I seen it I guess I didn't.

Freaky- no worries man.  Thanks for taking the time to contact Shimano and clarify.

Well I think we all know that just like any manufacturer, they probably paid a lot for some big time lawyer to write their warranty. They could probably find a way to weasel out of any repair if the really wanted to due to the "CREATIVE WRITING" stated in just about every warranty out there that you read. Anywho... it was a good effort and a good topic freaky.
