I needed to spool a reel with fluorocarbon at a recent tourney.  I couldn't use my spooling station, and I was leary of using this new line.  I'd heard good things about it, but I couldn't take chances with a new line in a tourney.

I'd heard that if you place a spool of lin ein a small bucket of water and spool it on that it loses a lot of memory, which is particularly a problem with fluoro.  I have to say, I used my hotel room's ice bucket and filled it half fullof warm water.  I placed the spool in the bucket and wound it on how I normally would.

I'd have to say it went on smoother than any other method I've used.

Eric, remind me to show you the spooler i keep in my boat. It's the handiest dern thing i've ever bought. I got it at Dicks for like $10. It's got a rod to hold the spool, and a suction cup so you can stick it on whatever...I stick it to the fiberglass on the side of my console.

I was under the impression that fluorocarbon line did NOT absorb water or any of the line tamers that you spray on spooled lines??????

Its the temprature of the water that helps, the hotter the better.

Baron, I'm no genius, so the science of anything beyond boiling water escapes me.  I think that fluoro comes with a lot of "chalk" on it, as I heard Mike Iaconelli call it.  He actually takes a rag, sprays it with silicone spray (like Reel Magic) and winds it through the soaked cloth and onto his reels.  I've done that before as well, but the fluoro line tends to wrap itself around the tip of the rod, and thus, put twist in the line.

This method seemed to wet the line, remove the chalk before it ever came off the spool.  No wrapping around the tip of the rod, which made it easy to spool on.

There is an item available to untwist your line. Its (I think) at BPS, and is a small plastic piece that you put on the tip of your rod (firmly) and reel the line in. This item has a screw through it where you can attach it to your line and put the screw back in after your line been run through. This item is not expensive and believe me, it works.

Eric,

Tried your idea of putting the spool of Fluoro in a bucket of warm water and it went on great.  However after a day or two the memory came right back.  I found I need to stretch fluoro with either a heavy lure, or a good fish.  Then it seems to be OK for the rest of the day.

great tip me and my son use alot of floracarbon when on the lake and have to respool we just drop it in the lake goes on good that way also. but will try the warm water as well. ty doug

Guys all you need is some KVD Line and Lure Conditioner.  wet a not cotton rag down and run the line through it as you spool up.  rewet every 30 yards or so to coat your line.  It is a line treatment that will actually bond to your line making it stronger and last longer.  Also provides UV protection to it.  takes care of line memory.  Not just a lubricant. works on all lines, but was especially made with FC in mind.  check it out at www.lineandlure.com

After testing, I've found 303 Aerospace Protectant seems to work just as well as KVD Conditioner. I'm thankful I got a gallon of it a few years back. This stuff is amazing.

I've had trouble with casting this line on baitcasters, always wants to backlash.    I usually on use it on my spinning reels....any tips to help avoid backlashes with this line on baitcasters.....I want to use it on them.

could you also spray down the spool and let it soak a bit before you reel it on?  also with a 'line conditioned' rag ahead of the reel...

did something very similar with my Trilene Fluro last year...had the 'best fluoru experience' yet...

The best thing you should do Dchance is to have a look through the "Rods, Reels and Fishing Line" board, and if you don't find what you are looking for, then start a new thread in the "Rods, Reels and Fishing Line" board and everyone here will do their best to find a good answer for you  ;D

What would be the downside to spooling up with mono or braid, and then adding a 3 or 4 foot Flourocarbon leader?  Would there be a big problem with breaking off due to the swivle?

I do it all the time. Works great. Some guys join the lines with a knot, others use a snap swivel or a snap. Just remember the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Also, bear in mind if you use hardware to attach, that the weight of the hardware (snap or snap/swivel) may affect the action of the lure. Not a big deal with big crankbaits, jigs, etc, but may cause problems with smaller cranks, topwaters, etc.

Gabby

I usually use braid when I flip frogs, jigs, tubes, and creatures into pads or grass.

I have always used mono for worms, senkos, lizards, brushhogs, flukes, weightless, etc.  I think I am going to try putting a flouro leader on all of these aplications and see if it makes a difference.  Never used it before, and wondering if I have been missing out....

This is just the way it is "recommended" to put on.  I have also respooled halfway and soaked down the spool, then apply the rest of the line and resoak again.  By running it through the conditioned rag, you are ensuring an even coat on all the line and not missing any.  The biggest tip, no matter what is to apply it with enough time to let it dry.  Do not simply spray it on and cast.  It will just wash off in the water.

Can I spool this way with mono?

Worked great! Filled a few reels wit it.  One was rated upt to 10lb and I put 12 on it it seems to be ok but I think I willbe sticking with the guidlines from now on.
