Making your own hooks

Dose anybody know how to make your own hooks??

never thought of do it myself, first bending would be a issue to get them with the same bend time after time. Then sharping would be a issue you would spend hours to get to maximum sharpness out of each one. I think I'll just buy them and go fishing instead on making them.

   Long long long ago when I was a kid we made our hooks out of safety pins.  Before that the Indians made them out of bones and stones.

I suppose the "cost effectiveness" would depend on how many hundreds of hooks you go through a day.  You'd have to build tooling to form the eye of the hook, tooling to create the bend of the hook for various sizes, tooling to cut the barb on the hook and form the point.  Then because the wire is fairly soft to begin with, you'd have to have some sort of metal tempering system to harden the wire, and then sharpen the hook point, either chemically or mechanically.

Once you have all of this taken care of, I suppose it would be cheaper to "roll your own."

Just buy them in bulk.  That is the way to do it.  You can get them alot cheaper if you buy by the 50-100-1k.  Depends what style.

Where is your favorite place to buy bulk?

mine is ebay.  Someone will buy big bulk (1000s) and split up the bulk purchase and pass the savings on.  Other than that, do a google search for tackle making or bulk fishing hooks and you will find several suppliers.

It all depends on style of hook but check out Stamina. sometimes they are pretty cheap.

You save 10% if you buy 100.  If you shop around on the net you probably can do better then that.  When I bought my jig hooks by the 1k I saved a ton.  Probably saved about $75 or so.

The way to do it is get your buddies in on it and buy atleast 100 at a time. If you got enough fishing buds.  Might beable to swing 1k from a company willing to give you a better deal.
