Approach with caution, as the accident or debris in the water could render you a victim as well.  Before attempting to rescue a boater in the water, phone or radio the police or Coast Guard, then approach the victim by putting the bow into the current and or wind; swing the bow towed him/her and when you get close, put the engine in neutral. This will minimize the danger from the propellers.

If the swimmer is conscious, tie a rope at the middle and stern of your boat, then put the rope in the water; the victim can then use the formed loop as a step to crawl into your boat.  If however the victim is unconscious, position him at the stern and maneuver him so he faces away from the boat.  With his/her arms in the air, grab the victims wrists and bob him/her up and down and on the 3rd bob, use the momentum to pull the victim into the boat.  Elevate his legs and cover him with a blanket, this will help treat for shock.  Stay at the scene until help arrives if the victims condition allows.

Do Not get into the water to get someone out.  A conscious panicked victims' thrashing could put you at risk and make you part of the recovery.
