Stump bumper

I have an old Cajun and am putting a new Eagle Fishelite 480 with a thru the hull transducer on it. My question is about the fiberboard construction.
The instructions say to remove the fiberboard down to thelast layer fiberglass. I am thinking about boring a half inch hole, fiberglassings over it then epoxying in the transducer. Would that be a good idea or not?
