I often fish top water with frogs and during a tournament this past weekend I had a large number of misses. Sometimes its a matter of using the right equipment to increase your hook ups. After some research I have become aware that there are rods specifically designed for fishing Frogs.

I see that there is a G-Loomis and Team Diawa 'Frog' rod.

Does anyone have experience with these 'Frog' rods?  ....Can you suggest a 'frog' rod that I should look at?

Jeez Mike, now you know I love my frogs and you didn't even bother to ask me  :'( Sorry you missed those fish, heck, sorry I missed them  lo

B1,
do a search on 'froggin'...I started a thread a few days ago that covers some of the issues...but key in that thread is a response from Baron who put out a shout for a Kistler rod (7'3" heavy action)...I looked it up...retails around $149 and looks like a great option with regard to jigs etc as well...

I'm using Cabelas XML rods (7 foot heavy action)...but I've always thought real hard about the Kistlers...

The other key:  if you're not using braid, I'd really suggest you do...it only took me about 3 years of thinking about it before I spooled it up...for this application (frogs on top) it's a must...and by the way, I set the hook on the strike...I don't 'wait to feel the fish'...hook ups are 80% or more...if the fish gets the frog, I get the hook set...

Good luck...

just a point of view from me....

i like a heavy ( or possibly MH if it's pretty heavy for a MH) action 7 foot rod with a bit of a fast tip for casting.

basically if you can find a rod you like that has ALOT of backbone and a decent tip for casting  it will work well!

I have no problem with rods when throwing a ribbit, this past weekend i tried the spro frog but i couldnt get the action i wanted, i guess you could use a medium action for topwater? i will have to look but i think i was using a MH 6'6

SkeeterBoy

If you are currently using a 6'6" rod or longer in a MH or H action Then the rod is not your problem.  Keep in mind when frog fishing you have to give the fish a couple extra seconds to eat it compared to other baits.  I am currenlty using a cheap shimano convergence that is 6'6" long and it has a MH action.  I never miss a hookup as long as I give the fish time to take it.  Practice counting 3-5 seconds after the initial strike and I promise your hookups will go way up.  No since spending 200.00 on a rod when it is not necessary.  Just my .02.

Skeeterboy, I've yet to miss a fish that 'gets' the frog...even though I hit em as soon as I can...

But one of the things I really, really like about froggin'...even when that bass misses, you can toss back in and they'll hit it...not always the case with other lures...but they really 'commit' to frogs...

I'd have to say wait the 2-3 seconds also. I am an avid frog fisherman and setting the hook too soon is the biggest mistake I see most beginners make.
A 7' to 7'6" MH fast tip is my rod of choice. Currently I am using a Quarrow Green Country 7'2" MH Fast tip with a Batam Curado 200B spooled with 50# Power Pro and this is the sweetest frog rod I have ever thrown.

Im not having problems with hook ups. but fishing the spro frog i couldnt get it to walk the dog? if thats how you work it. i might try a medium and see if that works.

i dont know many people who walk the dog with the spro or scum style frogs!!!

i think they are good with a small jerk so the nose rises out and slaps the scum or water as it rocks back down!

Was that a good price on that Quarrow Green? Would you say it's better equal to or not quite as nice as the crucials you have?  I been looking at getting a heavier baitcaster rod.

In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

GotstaFish

The quarrow was a gift from a close friend so I really don't know the cost. I also use a 7'6" MH Crucial as a back-up rod and there is little difference.

Dug

Thanks I will look into them and see.  Can you pass along a model number when you get the chance. No hurry, I ain't buying for a week or 3.

Railroader:  a tip from BASS Insider a few weeks back on ESPN...use a scissors and cut one 'leg' just a bit shorther than the other...really supposed to help them turn better for the side to side 'come-hither-sa-shay' big bass seem to like...

Thanks for all the feedback.

Sorry Karl, didn't mean to skip over you. I already know what rods you use for Frogs.

I was hoping to get some suggestions on a few more specific rods. A friend of mine has an older model of the Team Diawa road (Light and Tough, heavy) and loves it. I personally am a fan of the Shimanos and found the model #CRC-X72H which is a 7' 2" Extra Heavy.  I don't mind spending the money but have found that I don't know if I like a rod until I have used it a few times and don't want to spend $160 on something that I wont use.
