Hey guys I am looking to get an on board charger. I have very limited space so im going to mount it upside down. I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations. I am charging one crank and one deep cell 12v. Im looking for one that is easy to install very small and will charge up quickly as I keep my boat in a storage unit with no electricity. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike, if you do not have electricity where you are storing your rig, I think your best bet would be a stay 'n charge.  It is a charger that actually chargers your batteries while you are towing your boat back and forth to the ramp.  This way you won't have to pull your boat, bring it to an electric hook up, charge them up, then drive them to your storage unit.  It sounds like the only way to go for your situation, if I'm understanding it correctly.  I have not used these, but others on the site have with good success.  I'm sure someone with one will be by with specific questions you may have...

Yeah I read a thread with them but dont know the first thing about them. Not sure if I can use one due to very limited space in the back.

Mike, someone was on here a week or so ago talking about a solar charger that charges your batteries while you are on the water. From what they were saying, it didn't seem to take up much room and was fairly portable. I'll see if I can find the thread for you.

The Stay-N-Charge unit is used in conjunction with your vehicle to charge all your boat batteries while towing to and from the water.  It hooks into the vehicle via a 7-pin plug (the round kind) on the back of the vehicle and uses the vehicles existing wiring and circuit protection.  This system saves you $$ in batteries because you plug in and start charging immediately upon pulling the boat out of the water which saves battery life.  This sytem works in conjunction with your current onboard charger, but uses DC power versus AC which allows for more complete charge - up to 98% versus low 90s with standard onboard charger - again saving battery life.  Batteries should last as long as your standard vehicle battery with both the Stay-N-Charge and All Charge units installed.

The All Charge unit is used to charge all boat batteries (up to 36 volt system) from your outboard motor.  It also is used in conjunction with your current onboard charger, but you can use a single bank onboard charger to charge 36v system with the All Charge saving you weight in back end.  The All Charge is the brains - charging only when required, when batteries hooked up correctly, and charges in 5 minute cycles per battery.  After an hour of trolling motor use - the All Charge will charge back to full charge with 10-20 minutes of big motor run time.

My tourney partner had only All Charge unit installed for two months.  He said he still had to charge when he arrived home - but only for an hour or less.  He fished a lot and ran very little - big motor did not have enough time to put full charge back to batteries.  Then we hooked up the Stay-N-Charge and he now arrives home with full charge.  No extension cords are required at home or in hotel parking lots after a day on the water.

Let me know if you have further questions - glad to answer anytime.  Check my siggy for link.
