Ok I saw this in a Cross lake Report and they are called perch!

Is it a southern thing!  They look like crappie to me.

OK. they are the same fish. In the north they are called crappie. In N. Louisiana they are called white perch. In Oklahoma it looks like crappie but it's pronounced, "crappy". In Florida I believe they call them specs. In S. Louisiana they are called "Sac-a-lait".

Down south they are known by two names - speckled perch and crappie.  Depends on the person describing.

It is a southern thing. Drives me nuts. I always make sure I clarify when I talk to someone. When they say white perch, I say "You mean crappie." If you want to prove a point, get into what they'd call a black crappie vs a white crappie with this white perch nonsense. I want to make sure they're not talking about white bass too. A lot of folks are really confused down here as to what some fish are called. Just strike up a conversation about it at a local dock with a few people and you'll see what I mean. I also go nuts over the term "jack fish" because the jack fish I have come to know is a salt water fish, not a chain pickerel.

I also think (but not sure on this) that there is another fish called a white perch that has a more pronounced lateral line and isn't as speckled as a crappie. fishbase.org is a useful resource.

I've also heard Canadians refer to northern pike as jacks.

As stated above in Oklahoma they are called Crappie in the Okla. State Fishing Guide......I am not sure what a jack fish is I know what a Pickerel Chain....largest caught in Okla. is 2lb.10oz......now if I just could see a Jack Fish........

In Texas those are crappie, pronounced croppy, a jack fish is a jack crevalle, and a white bass is a sandie, and a speck is a specled sea trout.  lo

theWainrights

Those there fish are crappie, black crappie to be exact.  White Perch are a totally different species of fish all together (no matter where you are from).  Crappie have black blotches on them and have a larger girth.  White perch are more slender & sliver.  My portfolio pic is me with my 14" black crappie that I caught last May.  I missed State Record by 1/2 lb & 1/2"....  See pics below.

White perch are "Morone americana" and are closely related to striped bass (believe it or not).  Here's a white perch...

Black Crappie are "Pomoxis nigromaculatus".  Here's a black crappie.

And come Sunday I'm gonna be eating those 'perch' and that cat...wife said I could have some even though I didn't catch any that day... ;D

And 'jackfish' are quite tasty too...don't kill um' :)

It always gets on my nerves too. ~rant I was raised in Arkansas to call any member of the sunfish family besides Largemouth a "perch".

After 16 years in the North East I learned what a perch was, and caught a lot of them through the ice.

Now that I am back to warm water everyone refers to everything from redears to bluegills as perch.

That's fine Blake, just try and grow a muskie or northern pike down there in Florida... :roll2: then get back to me...

One of my favorite names for a fish has always been 'gaspergou' (flathead, yellow cat, etc)...

As for crappie, specked perch is a pretty common name...probably shortened to perch...and that 'other fish'?  Sure looks like a fiddler to me... ;)

My husband told me the other day that he got into an argument at work with a guy who said Turkeys couldn't fly!      :-\     :roll2:

Any one want to take a stab at that one??

bassn1

:roll2:  Anyone rmember the turkey episode of WKRP in Cincinnati?  ~roflmao

They dropped turkeys from a helicopter on Thanksgiving.

Well I'll chime in with; Those are good eating crappies here in the Ohio river bottoms. I catch and release them...in hot grease! ~c~ ~c~

As far as do Turkeys fly?......Well I loved the show WCKP in Cincinnati. I'm in the office with a guy like Les Nesman.... lo
My sister-in -law will never live down my joking her about that same comment. She said turkeys don't fly. I said to her " What do they do walk up the side of the tree they roost in?" Real good climbers  :roll2:

White perch are white perch, bait stealing fish in lake Erie when you after them walleyes. The other perch in Erie is the yellow ring perch....Very good eating too!!!

Sorry dude, a "gou" is a small, ugly shad looking fish all it's own. Down here anyways. It's a trash fish we sometimes catch near the lock @ dam while white perch fishin.  ;D

rbell88

Being from Cincy, I remember that episode very well of the turkey dropping. :roll2: Its a classic. I can also second that the yellow perch from Erie is some good eatin. A couple of years ago I went to Erie for a couple of days to smallmouth fish. Only caught a couple in the morning, so after lunch we switched to Walleye. Lets just say we didn't tear the walleye up either. So the next day we fished for the yellow perch so that we could take some fish home for the freezer. Pretty boring to fish for as we were pulling two at a time, but they rank right up with the walleye in the taste category. :food :food

I believe that is a white bass in these parts

White Bass (Morone chrysops) are a larger cousin to White Perch, they do look very much alike, except White Perch do not have multiple dark lines down their sides. The range for White perch was along the Atlantic coast, from the New England states south into South Carolina, and primarily in brackish water rivers. They are now also found in some of the Great Lakes. An average size White perch is about 10 inches, with a few reaching up to 15 inches in length. White Perch are very popular within the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and as far as I know there are no White Bass here.  ~shade

BTW, Turkeys can fly, and very well too! Domestic Turkeys can't because their wings are usually clipped to prevent them from flying away.  ;)

Nicely done Big Jim, yes; I forgot about the striped bass like markings on the white bass(midwestern).  I was an inland fisher as a young Marylander.

and the extent of my knowledge of wild turkey is that it's 101 proof!
