I thought I'd start a thread about Pflueger reels to find out what experiences you folks have had with them.  I've never owned/used one and we are going to be carrying them in my store possibly as soon as next week.  I'd love to know all the positives and negatives about this line of reels.

Thanks.

I bought my first Pflueger reel last season. I got a Shimano Curado for my birthday, but it was the wrong reel hand. I took it back to get the left hand crank, but as I was waiting to get waited on, I picked up a Trion, and was checking it out. I thought , man , this is a really smooth reel, smoother than the shimano. I was wanting a reel for my lite bait duties, like the fluke, tube. Well, I decided to get it, and I am glad I did. It was more than I imagined , great reel. I have always been a shimano man, but I think Pflueger is winning me over. They are coming out with another new reel called the Purest, which is suppose to be awlsome....

I bought three pflueger reels a year ago.  Today they are my main reels.  I always put the lures I plan to throw the most on the Pflugers. Love them.

Well I have the President reel I love it , 9 ball bearing 6:3:1, one of the smoothest reels i have thrown. Now for the Trions I hear good reports but I dont have one. I do have one of the older Criterions ''JUNK''. It almost caused me to stay away from plueger reels but I 'm glad I got the President. I hear the Trions are about 40 bucks cheaper than the President, My buddie said they were a hot sale, He runs a small baitshop here in Kentucky.

I handled a Trion baitcaster at the Louisville show a couple weeks ago.  I understand what you are saying about them being really smooth.  So far I have seen these priced at just under $100.  Haven't handled any of their spinning reels yet.  As I understand it, we will carry the President spinning but not the baitcaster for some unknown reason.  We are working on getting the baitcaster in too.

What kind of prices have y'all been seeing on the Pflueger reels?

I took a fishing class here at one of colleges and they had the pflueger reels and after that i bought one and like it alot. BPS has the extreme which like the pflueger and i have 5 of them so thats all i use and im happy with them...oh I have a team diawa that was 150 $ and it doesnt work. so more $ isnt always better..

At our local bps extension the prices are President baitcaster[$129.00] Trion[$99.00]. My buddy is selling the President for $120.00 but don't think he's making much on them. Gotta tell you about a deal I found the other day, I was at Lake Cumberland at a local tackle store, they had Rapala rods buy one get one, I had never felt of a Rapala rod but they feel like a Allstar. I got 4 rods for a whomping $130.00.

Ohbassaholic, you may already know this but if you dont check out fish33.com if you have your deales licence there are some awesome deals there, you have to make a minium order of $250,. the other day I saw plueger trion spinning reels for $24 thats hard to believe I know but they have alot of good buys for someone who has a tackle shop , or a way to sell.

I have two Supremes that I got about a year ago. Both of them are as good as the day I bought them. They are great reels.

I've got a Trion that I had for no more then 8 months before it went  ~bu,  I kept it in my rodlocker for about 1 year 8 "months of playing in the sand" 4 or 5 months fishing before I pulled it out & to look at it.

Here is what I found, the guts are a mostly metal with the only plastic I could see was used as a bushing.  the spring used to to re engage the gears after casting had slipped out of the slot it belonged in.  I pulled the spring out & put a "Z" bend in the end that slipped in the slot on the engagement lever & it works now.  Trouble was I had to dang near take the whole thing apart to get the spring back in place after I made the bend & in doing so the sleeve that fits over the spool shaft wouldn't go back on easily & now after some force is in place but the braking system isn't as effective.  I.E. I crank down on the brake wheel but the best I can get out of it is minimal at best.

So, it cast great, it is & has all ways been very very smooth, but with mine not long lasting.  I used it this past tournament on Bisteneau & had to thumb the spool when ever I set the hook or I'd get a small back-lash

I can't speak to the baitcasting reels, But the President spinning reels are very good. I had been fishing mostly Quantum Energy spinning reels and was looking for some cheaper reels to use for backups. I now use the Presidents as my front line setups. The Trion spinning reels are very nice also. I highly recommend both Pllueger reels.

I have field tested just about every reel on the market, and the pfluger reels are a good reel, but i am a little concerned with there durability and longevity especially if you are on the water a lot.  I will just stick with Shimanos

I have to agree with you there, Richard.  When I talk with folks about the Pfluegers, I tell them that out of the box, I would stack the Trion up with the Curado SF but I can't say that it's tournament grade yet.  I am buying two to try out this year so I will be able to advise better on their durability.

I have two Supremes and have used them for three years and haven't had a single problem with them. They are my primary reels. I am going to get the President and Trion this weekend. Pflueger makes reels for Bass Pro Shops check 'em out and compair them the next time you're there.

If your talking about the XPS reels, I thought they were the same company as Pflueger.  I have taken them apart and all the guts look the same.

My only problem, suggestion with both XPS & Pflueger and any other company that has the same setup is to change the bends in the springs so they are fixed to the parts they are connected to.  I.E. weld them "most likely would brake lose" or like I did put an extra bend in them so they can't come off.

You'll love the president.  Great reel.  Smooth and trouble free.  Go to BPS and give it a few cranks and you'll be set on it.

well, here is something to think abou with the reels. Not many shops work on those reels so that is important so customers will need to know who and where to send reel for repairs. and will probably have such questions as: how long will repairs take? is there a warranty center and where is it located? Lots of times, anglers don't think about repairs and then when time comes, they get discouraged with that particular brand of reel. conniek

Very good point ConnieK thank you for the insight ~c~ yes it can be very frustrating if you can't get a reel repaired or find the parts to repair it yourself :-*

It IS a good point!  I guess since I have never had any trouble with my reels, I never ran across this problem.  The reels I've had the longest are all Shimanos and all the others that were not, I've sold off or given away...

Dean

Not sure I would place it (Pflueger) by a curado, but mostly from knowledge of one reel a friend bought that occasionally slipped (anti reverse) badly and always at an inopportune time.  It may be the only bad reel they ever made for all I know.  I just know it is only $19. more for a curado... I have 6, one of them almost 10 years old and never had a reel problem.  Can't see messing with that track record.  Hope they don't quit making curados for a lot of years.

Andrew

The Dicks sporting goods here where i live was having a pretty big sale today and i picked up a trion for sale price of $79 bucks. Always thought they were smooth reels and i had some new crucials laying round without reels so thought i would try one. I've had a echelon for a few months now for short range pitching and last year used the president spinning reels before i started using okuma spinning reels this year. I also tried power pro once before and had negative issues with it but dicks had 300 yard spools on sale for $17 for 50lb and under. So i got two 300 yard spools of it in 50lb and 30lb to try on the trion and on one of my spinning reels. Figured at that price might as well give pp one more chance lol.

OH, did your trion last very long or what ?

Wow, you pulled an old thread up from 2005, Andrew.

I actually did not end up buying any Pfluegers myself.  After we spooled a Trion up as a demo, I found it to be nowhere close to a Curado SF and decided against getting any.  Although, just yesterday I had a customer come into the store that I sold a Trion to back then and he wanted another.  Unfortunately we aren't carrying them any more.  They don't even show up as available to stores in our region.  I can tell you at least that they have been proven in the field by a follow pro-staffer that had NO problems with his the past 2 Tx seasons now.  If I decided to try a Pflueger out today, I believe I would go with a Summit or Supreme.

The big Fishing event we have going on this week has our store advertising the Element and Echelon in the Pflueger line-up.

tell you the i just did a search on the trion and didn't even look at the date of the thread lol.

Since they don't show up anywheres even here i guess those two they had were just old stock or something then. Just like the echelon i got its just for a backup and didn't want to spend too much on it. My main reels are six accurist pt's with a new revo stxhs thrown in i got for christmas.

btw, my choice was between the trion and a new shaw grigsby quantum on sale for $89 i think it was. I looked at it seemed ok for a cheaper reel.

That new Shaw Grigsby seems like a nice reel and I think with the sale price tag it is worth buying.  As I recall, they are reg. price at $119.99 and I had guys this past week opt for the Accurist PT for $20 more.

Another good buy to check out would be the Accurist II since it is clearanced at $69.97...

Andrew

Is the accurist II the same as the accurist ac500cx? I have two blue ac500cx's i use on my two topwater rods. I just loaded the trion with 15lb pline cxx and it took alot to fill up that big spool on the trion...
