Tonight's topic of discussion will be "Lure Modifications". You must include the lure type, the modification made and the reason it makes the bait work better.

So each post should have three things:
1. The bait
2. The modification made
3. The reason

Each time you post to this thread you will gain one entry into tonight's contest. At 9pm Eastern, 8pm Central we will draw our winners and a bonus prize. The bonus prize will go to the member with the most posts, that has not won anything else in tonight's contest.

Good Luck!

Soft plastic jerk baits, Super flukes and all these types of baits. Instead of tieing the hook directly to you line, place a swevel , then a leader then the hook. This will cut down on line twist.

I put reflective tape on the inside of the spoon on either side of the hook.

The reason being that sometimes the fish get conditioned to the constant normally average reflection given off by the spoon...so, after catching a few fish it's like using a new bait, when all it really is is a modification to the original action that's working.

Ah my favorite lure mod it to thin the skirts on spinnerbaits (any brand) or replace them with skirts that are thinner but larger strands of rubber.
Big fish (over 8 lb.s ) seem to prefer the thinner skirts about 90% of the time. .

what does that do to the bait? to get bigger fish to bite

When fishing docks with a buzzbait bend the wire either left or right so that the buzz bait will run toward the dock and even under it.

Snaggless Sally

I add a 6-10" plastic worm as a trailer

Reason is two-fold...it adds size to a relatively small bait; and, it causes the bait not to sink like a rock...sometimes that's just what's needed to be on the bite.

Fish-N-Fool Lures

Another one of my lures mods is to add an Idaho spinner in front of a texas rigged plastic worm.

Dip the tail end of your soft plastics in your choice of dye to highlight your bait and give it a more attractive appearence.

I remove the front treble hook.

It enhances the action of the bait, and causes it to get hung up less often.

Johnson Silver Minnow or any spoon or dear devil type lure.

Take a large tube bait & thread it on over the hook & spoon to create a brand new look.  Sinks a bit slower & gives a totally new look to the same old thing.

Add a Lindy split tail grub to the back.

This is a great way to fish a spoon in the Spring, the split tail makes the spoon ride higher in the water and creates the impression of a Spring frog.

I add a big fat tube bait with a trailer hook in the same color to my large buzz baits when fishing for muskies and pike

What does this do to the bait? why does it make it better?

Stand up River jigs

Add a 4" black Burke worm to the back of the jig...makes it look like a river leech, very effective for smallies

Jared LeBlue

When fishing a tube jig take a small rubber band, like the ones you had to use on your braces, and place it over the eye of the jig head and stretch it to tje barb of the hook. This will make it weedless and when you set the hook the rubberband will pop right off.

Ron Fogelson

Take a crawworm with blue pinchers & dip or paint with chartreuse spike it dye or marker turns the claws iridescent blue & mimics the color & flash of brim, deadly around cypress trees

Fish-N-Fool Lures

I some times fish a Silver minnow bait with a live frog across the top of pads. the spoon helps keep it up on top

Rapala Original Floating Minnow

Add a number of tiny splitshot weights to the line approximately 12" ahead of the bait...this makes the bait work slightly different and run a little deeper than normal.

sometimes it's all you need to change your luck...play with the amount of weight to add.

Mike Noble

I remove the screw and hook from a Spoon...thread on a skirt...the put the hook back on.  Gives it more action in grassy areas.

Tube baits

Add a small piece of Alka-Seltzer inside the tube bait, then insert the jig inside the tube leaving a small gap.

plop, plop, fizz, fizz oh what a relief it is.

Fish-N-Fool Lures

on all my rapala minnow baits I add a red treble hook to the front and remove the rear hook. The added red on it makes for more hits and the  removing the rear hook gives it a little more action

Ron Fogelson

When using the Terminator soft plastics & thread it on the hook & then back it off & apply supper-glue to the hook head & rethread it. Keeps the bait in place better, you can use them fish after fish.

Fishaholic

Tiny Torpedos

Unscrew the treble/spinner from the back of the lure...add an Arbogast fly sized hula skirt and replace the treble without the spinner.

Great old bait with a new twist.

Fish-N-Fool Lures

Tube baits any brand
I add a glass rattle inside the tube. the extra noise makes it sound like a crawfish. I try to use reds and browns for this mostly
