Dave's post is right on the money as far as I am concerned. It has been a couple weekends since I have been there but I catch topwater fish all day, it was partly cloudy and WINDY but they would still eat it. Go with something that makes some noise if the wind is up like a prop bait, and try it off and on all day. Also a couple weeks ago in the afternoon the giant flat that is on the left hand side of the lake as you are headed towards the damn had schoolers on it, they were mostly slots but they are still alot of fun, you'll understand the flat when you get there there will probably be several boats on it.

That flat Mike is talking about is one of my favorite spots.    I have had a BUNCH of success there with chug bugs (orange bellys worked great during the late summertime) when the fish are schooling.  You might even want to chunk a senko in the mix, and see if momma is hanging out at the bottom of the school.  Haven't tried a topwater there yet this year, but I can't wait to get into some schoolies with that bug!

Another good flat is under the bridge, inside the first big point on your right side.  It will run around 3 feet most of the way, with some funky structure inside the pocket.  Don't be afraid to rig up a split-shot lizard or fluke there.  Lots of unders that are fun to catch at the right times and conditions.  We have also seen some pretty big explosions there from time to time.

Another successful Carolina rig is with the Reaction Lure "Wacky wacky."  That is a "T" shaped worm, or lazy man's wacky worm.  Try it along the flat Mike is talking about.  My buddy Brantley said they were hammering it over by the levee off the points (one point has gravel on it, and shallow).  There is a creek bed that runs along that levee - and perch fishermen are usually stacked on it.

For a smaller lake, Grand has got to be one of the best around.  Hope we get to fish it in the TCTC this year!

This is a fishing report/ human interest story.  It all started July of last year when I was fishing Bisteneau.  I lost a Yozuri bannana boat lure in a tree near Pine Cove.  :'(  It was too high for me to retrieve, so for the next 9 months or so, I would go by and "visit" my lure whenever I fished there.  I fished Bisteneau the first weekend of April and a storm had knocked my lure down a couple of branches, and I was able to get it back.  :D  Fast forward now to last weekend on Grand Bayou.  Friday evening I was fishing with a couple of friends when I decided to tie on the clown-colored bannana boat.  On the first cast I caught a slot fish.  :)  I then proceeded to catch 3 more in the course of about thirty minutes with the same lure.  I had such a good time that evening that I decided to take another trip to the "Grand" Saturday morning.  I caught one fish on a black buzzbait first thing in shallow cover.  Then I noticed some fish hitting topwater and chasing shad twenty yards or so off the point I was fishing.  I still had my Yozuri bannana boat tied on so I gave it a whirl.  By 8:00 I caught 8 fish, all on that same lure.  ;D  I worked that area with a Carolina rig and a deep diving crankbait ( the depth was 9ft), but no takers.  The last fish I caught was on another point in 10 feet of water on a deep diving crank (Black back, blue sides, chrome belly).  I guess that bannana boat was long overdue for catching some, and it caught up pretty good in just under 24 hours.  That was only the second and third time I fished the lake and I had a really good time.  I have a tourny there on the 24th so I will probably fish it again this Sunday.  I'll let you know how it goes.  ;)

Well, I'll tell them, Trey.

Trey and I fished Grand Sunday morning from sun up until about 12:30 (we both had to leave, and the wind was brutal).

We both caught a couple fish (if you count jackfish - I caught  2 and Trey caught 3).  The water was very clear, and I caught my biggest fish yet - which is probably average for most of you all.

I caught this 4.2 pounder on a Carolina Rigged "Wacky Wacky" (a "T" shaped worm by Reaction) in about 6-7 feet of water.  I was fishing a big drop off which goes from about 14 to 3 feet.  The cool thing was that Trey and I had a double hook up.  He slung his fish in the boat and grabbed the net for mine.

We had a good time on Grand, which is the usual.  Looking forward to May 2!

Gabby

Trey

Gabe,

Again, nice fish and congrats on a new personal best!  ;D  I had a really good time even though the weather was terrible.  I also wanted to let everyone know that I fished Grand yesterday, too and Clint, Jay and I caught quite a few.  Clint had the biggest of the day, yesterday with 3.1, caught on a Carolina Rig.  That was the only over fish we caught, all the rest were either in or under the slot.  We caught fish on Rougues, Carolina Rigs, Flukes, Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits, and topwater lures.  Water was clear by the dam and stained to muddy under the bridge, with temps ranging from 68-71 degrees.

I fished a tournament on Grand Bayou yesterday before the rain and thunder shut us down.   :'( We caught a lot of fish early on the humps in the middle of the lake using rattle traps and crankbaits.  We managed to catch a few more on topwaters, texas-rigged worms, and rougues down by the dam around 9-10 AM.  Most of the fish we caught were in the slot, with two unders and no overs.  :-\ Everybody in our club caught fish, but only two boats had fish to weigh in.  My team took second place with only two fish to weigh in.  8)  We had about 14#'s of slot fish we couldn't weigh in, so even though we had a light bag, we still caught a lot of fish.  ;D  The water was clear and temps ranged from 71-75 degrees.

Fished Grand Friday morning.  Caught about 15 in our first 20-30 minutes.  Caught a bunch of unders, and lost a pretty decent fish (well over 3 lbs).  More details after the TC tournament!

Gabby

Well, Friday morning we hit one of the points on the East side almost directly across from the launch (on the big island) to start.  We knew it was a bit windy, and the fish might be up on the surface.

When we got there, the fish were hitting all around us - and even schooling in some spots.  We used the old Chug Bug and got about 15 pretty nice slot fish in our first 20 minutes.

This is the same spot that some of you saw my partner Daniel and I camped on most of the morning Sunday in the TC tourney.  We were lucky it was still holding fish, and got our limit by 6:45, and started culling at 7.  Unfortunately, a couple of the fish were not in good shape after nearly the entire day in the livewell (10 gallon).  Daniel spent 20 minutes trying to save one of our catches.

Congrats on the Victory, that is 2 on Grand for you Buddy!!!!!!!  I guess we will have to call you Mr. Coushatta!!!

you and Beeze need to let up on us in Fantasy Baseball to make it more competitive  ;D  ;D  ;D

Gabby

Steve,

I can't take too much credit - since I am still a sponge and owe the two wins to you and Brantley putting me on fish!

As far as Fantasy Baseball goes - forget it brother!!!  Hope we can go fishing sometime soon, but I know we are both busy guys!

My son and I caught 18 today - 11 would weigh, with 3 over the slot.  The total weight of the 11 was 19 lb, with the biggest just under 5 lb.   We caught the fish on humps in the mid and south part of the lake.  Primary baits were rattle trap, senko and wacky worm, with the bigger fish being caught on rattle traps.  Also a really nice size jack fish is swimming around in the lake with my rattle trap hanging from his lip.  :)

Trey

Congrats on the nice stringer!  That would have been an impresive weight for our tournament!  Rat-L-Traps have been producing well for me, too.  I used to never use them, until I fished Bisteneau last fall.  I decided to try one over the grass there, and for the next three or four months I loaded the boat with them!  I now try a Trap everytime I go out; it has become a great go-to/confidence bait for me.  My favorite colors are some type of chrome variation on sunny days and gold on cloudy days.  Sometimes I will try gold or even red on lakes where the fish have seen a few chrome Rat-L-Traps.  Was there anything else on or around those humps like grass or sticks?  Did you try a Carolina Rig?  Did you throw the worms out into the open or near some kind if cover?

Rattle trap was bass color and they hammered it when they hit it.  Rattle traps have always been a bigger fish bait in my experience.

All of the humps had grass around them except one.  In one case we were at a drop off from a 2-3' flat dropping into about 10', with a 4' hump next to 10' area.  That's where we caught the biggest fish.  Its tail was still red from the spawn.

Tried a carolina rig with no luck.  I don't know what has happened, but carolia rig has not produced this year for me.

We fished wacky worm (red bug) and senko (watermelon) in the grass over and by the humps.

Fished GB today.  Caught 11 with 5 keepers - all unders.  Landed  them early on rattle traps and flukes around humps and drop offs.  Later in the day, the bite was tough.  Had a couple of nice ones that did not make it to the boat.  Water temp was 86.

Trey

I was on the water yesterday with Sears and we managed to land 14 with 5 keepers.  Most of the fish were in the slot with a couple of throwbacks.  We caught fish on Rat-L-Traps and crankbaits most of the time, with a few worm and C-rig fish.  After 9 or 10 AM the bite pretty much stopped.  We left at noon with five good fish and a few less baits than we started with.

Trey and I had a great time on GB.  I caught my first carolina rig fish in my short 1 year bass fishing career using a tiki stik and a split shot bullet weight.

The bass were schooling in one area that we stopped.  They all seemed to be no larger than a pound.  When they start boiling 10 feet from your boat it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.  I love fishing!

Gabby

Chet,

I caught my first Carolina Rig fish with Trey on Grand Bayou also.  I have also only been fishing for a year or so.

Grand Bayou is a great place to find those school fish.  You are right - they start blowing up, and you start grabbing for that top water!

I fished Grand this morning from 5:30 'til 9 and I caught 12.  On my third cast of the morning, I caught a 4.3 # on a black buzzbait.  ;D That was my only over fish.  I had three more in the slot and the rest were under (some were way under! ::) )  I caught most of my fish in one spot today.  There was a little schooling action, so that's were the majority of my smaller fish came from.  I could have probably caught more, but I tried a C-rig and a deep crankbait to get down to the big fish.  Most of my fish came on a gold lipless crank and a perch-colored DT16 from Rapala.  All of my slot fish were caught on Senkos (watermelonseed).  The water temp started at 83 and went up to 85 by the time I left.  Half of my fish were caught in shallow water on points, and the other half were caught in deep water near humps.

Thanks, brother.  Are you deployed or what?  If you are still here, let's go fishing already!  If not, get back here safe, let me buy you a steak, and then let's catch some fish in the pads at Caddo.

Fished GB yesterday, picking up 6 - all unders.  Didn't ever really find a concentration of fish.  Just picked one up here and there on different crank baits.  Water temp was 83 - 85.

Following the philosophy of "if you can't beat'em then join'em"  we pulled the boat up on a sandy spot and took a dip in the water for a couple of hours.

Fished GB yesterday from daylight to 3pm with 2 friends. The 3 of us caught 3 slot fish, 13 under the slot, 2 7lb grentals (bow-fin), and a couple jack fish. As normal for GB the game warden checked us. He said a couple tournament fishermen had caught a few nice fish off a point near the large island across from the ramp.

Gabby

Hey Moose, that sounds like my spot!  I have never been visited by a GW at GB.  Thanks for reminding me to renew my license!!!!

Mike,

I am glad you are staying put.  The wife is out of town till Thursday, so be minded that any afternoon/evening is game for me!

Fished GB saturday morning.  Daylight to 10am or so.  We caught 4 unders, 1 slot and 3 jack fish and a gar.  All came on zara spook jr. or a baby spook.  Caught most in 4 ft of water near some stick ups and the rest came from across the lake from the launch.  The jack fish were coming 2 feet straight out of the water when they hit.  It was awesome.  My dad and I both missed a +5lb bass so neither one of us could ridicule each other.  We had a great time.

I have been to GB four times and have never even seen a game warden.  Moose, you got a bad reputation or something?  ;D
