Fishing the right depth

When I'm jigging for Crappies before I tie on the jigs I put a red string like you use for slip bobers on the line and move it up and down till I find what depth the most active Crappie are at and now I have a very visable marker and can get back to the right depth with no problem just by watching the red string. If the crappie stop biting just repeat the process till you find the right depth again and your all set.

Tim you mean you didn't see that red string on my line when you were long poleing with us  The cold and rain and wind might have distracted you

That goes back a lot of years, even before anyone deliberately fished for bass.

Another trick is to use a styrofoam peanut (not the kind that dissolves!) When rigging up use a thin tent needle to spear the peanut and draw the mainline through before tying on a jig or minnow. Stain it yellow or whatever color thats easiest to see. If you use a thin needle the peanut will stay tight and you can slide it. It serves as a very inconspicuous float that responds instantly to the slightest bite, yet won't affect action of a jig or offer enough resistance to alarm a crappie.
