the item # of the kit is IG-316458 . model # 664. i'll try the other web site.

PBTriton

well....the guides are SLCB, that stands for "silicon carbide". Not bad for a $50.00 kit rod.
So, now the question is, why do feel like they are too big....?
It appears that they have sent you 7 guides and a tip....is that correct...?

I'm just speculating, but I think they probably sent you a 12, 2-10's, and 4-8's.
that'll give us a start.

Andrew

I got three kits like yours. Around $50. I figured i'd just mess with those to get the hang of it at first then step up to some gloomis or other good blanks and parts..I got two IM7 7'0" MH fast action casting rod and one fish eagle 2  spinning rod 6' MH fast action.

Did you wrap by hand? I bought a nice wrapper and dryer setup from cabela's and some assorted thread and a few other things. Once i get into buying actual blanks i'll order some guides and handles and some better glue and ect...

I saw the pics and looks good. I guess you saw that you can buy a rod pen so you can put your dads name on it for him.

Pete can you point me to a kit for a fast action spinning rod I can use for skipping baits?

PBTriton the problem i'm having with the feet of the guides is when i'm close to the tip the feet seem too large to lay flat on the rod. they want to hang off the edge.

PBTriton

Neil,

I haven't built any spinning rods, only bait casters.
With that being said, I am very impressed with the St. Croix blanks, and my first rod was a kit.
I would have no problems building one of their spinning kits.

Let me do a little reaserch, and I'll get back to you in a 'lil while.

bassindago

andrew i have not started wrapping my guides yet. i have a dryer that i made from an old record player motor. i just have to build the bracket for the moter and for the other end of the rod. which is easy to do out of 1x3 pieces of wood and place felt in one of them for the rod to lay in and not get scratched. i do plan on getting a rod pen to inscribe on the rod for my dad.

Bassindago.......

have you prepped the guides......?

If so, stand directly over the blank, looking down, and try to completely center the guide upon the blank, tape down stand back and study it, tweak as necessary.

But, sounds like guides haven't been prepped. Let me know.

PBTriton

Neil,

from reading your other posts from today, and from a 'lil reserch, I have found a couple of things you may want to consider.

As far as kits are concerned, finding the length and action that you want, well, your going to have limited choices.
If you were to build from scratch, you could chose your desired length and action with a lot more choices.
But, as for kits.....

If I was building ( a kit rod ) this rod for me, I would chose the following kit:
St Croix 6', 1 piece, MH. Fast action, Stock # SCSK-9 (from Mudhole Rodbuilding Supply).
Cabela's also has one, GS 605............same length same action....unknown blank.
Another supplier,(my choice) is Custom Tackle Supply http://www.customtackle.com/.

I think the 6'er would be ideal for this technique. You are not exceptionally tall, (taller than me, but everybody is taller than me....well....except.... Spectro,... AB.... ~roflmao ~roflmao) and the 6'er would be easier to control considering the attitude the rod needs to be in when you cast.
There are 7' MH's available if you just want that length.

good luck, let me know if I can help.....Go Cocks

Thanks a lot Pete, I'll let you know how it goes.  ~c~

i have filed the guide feet down to a ramp for the wrapping. i was kind of leary about bending the feet in to make them line up. i was worried that doing that might cock a guide to one side of another.

PBTriton

you shouldn't have to bend any guide....explain.

also, prep the bottom of the guide feet so they will lay perfectly flat on the blank.

what about the pics...........????????

bassindago

well the instead of the feet of the guides laying flat on the rod the edges of the feet want to hang over the side of the rod a little. i'm under the impression that the feet need to lay flat on the rod.
i hope this from shutterfly works

PBTriton

yes the feet need to lay flat on the blank.

keep working on shutterfly......

How's the rod building going....?

bassindago

have'nt really messed with it too  much lately. work and family have kept me from working on it. i did build a wrapping stand  and got a rotisserrie motor for a drier. i did change some fo the guides out for other ones i had from the rod i broke. they seemed to fit on the rod better.

bassindago

well i wrapped my first guide in a green color during my lunch break and it was fairly easy. i also did a trim wrap in gold. the first trim wrap came undone on me, but i rewrapped it and it seems to be hold good. will let ya'll know how the rest come out. and i'll post some pictures.

bassindago,
i'm certainly no expert, but, i have built some rods.

i actually started by "modding" my high end rods so that they'd have split grips & spiral wraps.
it was a tedious undertaking, but, i learned "Lots" by doing them.

then, when i began building rods from scratch, i was already familiar with the basics.

just a few suggestions:

1)if you haven't got Tom Kirkman's book about rodbuilding, you're doing yourself a dis-service.  Everyone who builds rods, ends up with his book ...go ahead & get yours & it'll help you a LOT!  ...rodbuilding.org

2)if you want to get some Good blanks at a good price, talk w/karen @bingham enterprises & ask her about her remaining shikari blanks.  she has some super deals on them (shikari has gone out of business ..actually changed hands & names ...but, they make some Very Good blanks)

she also has some st croix handle kits @half price, or better.

3) you Cannot go wrong by using Threadmaster epoxy for all your guides, marbelizing, etc...   andy dear will "take you under his wing" if you have any problems w/his product.  ..btw, karen also sells threadmaster

this is a st croix avid that i "modded" ---took the fore grip off, split the rear grip & re-tyed the guides so they would spiral.

this is a 7' CTS ultra lite i built...it's Very sensitive  ..have caught some pretty nice bass on it

just gives you an idea of what you can do w/a little bit of time & practice

thanks i appreciate the info. i am already looking to by some more blanks. although this time i'm not going to go with a kit. man this rod building is addictive. my wife is already mad that i haven't finished mr first rod and i'm already trying to buy more.

bassindago

well i finished my first rod and i'm already ordering my second rod. you can see the picts on shutterflyhttp://www.shutterfly.com/share/pictures.jsp

Mudhole.com has a really good deal on their st croix blanks and kits right now.

iv'e got another im7 rod ordered from cabelas. man i love the feel of this rod. i also ordered blur zirconia guides from mudhole and an american tackle reel seat with a blue stripe on it foor the rod. the guides will be wrapped in black with a blue stripe in them. if your wondering why all the blue and black. i'm a police officer. and i'm thinking about doing a chevron wrap just above the reel seat in the same colors. and i'm trying to decide if i want to split my grips or just leave them in one piece. this sport is as addictive as fishing.

bassindago

just wanted to thank everyone who helped me with building my dads rod. he teared up and couldn't speak . it was a special gift for him and for me. thank you again for all of ya'lls help
