why dont I see more Tiller steering boats here in CA?

like the Lund 1650, or that cool Alumacraft?   I have never seen a big tiller pass me on any California water? 

are they no good for our lakes/rivers?  not in vogue?

I love the wide open boat deck.  you can just walk around with ease!

I don't have a good answer for you.  I have experienced them in Minnesota on walleye guide trips and all the guideboats at Anglers Inn in Mexico are tiller boats.  In both cases for the exact reason you stated, nice wide open decks with plenty of room.  I think most people are just used to having a steering wheel, and consoles are nice on cold mornings.

i think that tiller-style boats have a place in tough to get into waters (northern) and have been favored by those who like to 'backtroll' (walleye guys for instance).  lighter boats, engines that you need to 'man-handle' into some areas, this is the way to go.

with Trolling motor improvements, bluetooth/remote steering... not as needed as much for slower trolled presentations.  watch the walleye guys on the tournament circuit.

personally, i'd rather sit at a console...

Yesterday, while being skunked on lake Berryessa, I got to talking to two OG's.  They were in a tiller Whaler built in 1977.   They had a new motor, and new modern trolling motor and all the electronics. 


First tiller I've seen!    The boat was spectacular!   Looked like a 12 footer

no.  not if I leave my motor at home.  I see a truck with a power washer in back going to the main ramp.  I assume it is the hot wash.
