I love spinnerbaits, but there were times, especially in the spring in the swamp style lakes here in the south that everyone throws them. So to make my bait seem a little different and draw strikes from bass that passed on the countless spinnerbaits they would see everyday, I turned to sound.

They all have flash, they all have a variety of color, they all have a variety of vibrations, but if you think about it a spinner bait rarely has sound. So I tried clipping rattles to them and it worked a little but I kept loosing the rattles. Next up, using my hydraulic schooling, sound waves caused by orifices can alter pressures.. This got me to thinking that drilling holes in a blade might create noise :-*

It works best with Indiana blades but drilling just a single hole in the middle of the cup has proven to generate more bites for me. Two holes can work but it starts to cause issues in the ability of the blade to spin, so use smaller bits if you want to use multiple holes.

A standard 1/8 bit is my go to.

Get some extra blades and play with it in your area. Good Luck ~c~

As a long time spinnerbait angler, I like to drill a hole up near the blade attachment point.  I drill this hole slightly off center and it does impart a different level of vibration.  It does not take much of a hole just a connection to make the blade spin off center.  If you think back to some of the earlier in line spinnerbaits, this was a common practice.  I want to think it was a panther martin was the first production bait that did this but not to all of their line.   The first bait and the most successful ever was an inline bait bought from one of those 59 cent category baits it too had a off center mounting hole on the blade and was an absolute killer.  I actually still have one somewhere in my long ago tackle stash but have not been able to find it.

Have a local guy that makes some nice spinners with multiple holes in the blades and serrated edges as well. They don't have as much lift so its great for working deeper. Got one last year and did not use a lot but will have one tied on for early spring fishing.
Retired and loving every minute of it!
