what do we know about fishing float TUBES?

I kayak fish exclusively.  I pondered a boat, now I am pondering the other direction.  there is a WONDERFUL lake near my home.  I have to hike up a mountain about 1/2 mile in.  but nobody really fishes it, and if they do, it is from the limited shore, which is basically the earthen dam.  the lake is surrounded by tule, so there is no other shore to fish from.  (not when the lake is full). I think I would crush it with a float tube.   no rigid watercraft allowed, so even if I went mad and dragged my kayak up the trail, it isn't allowed.   there are two lakes near to each other, but the other one I can launch a kayak.  I'll hit that one in spring.

tube?  anyone?

I'd just use a pair of waders unless it's deep. My next option would be one of those small one person inflatable rafts if that is legal. A tube just looks difficult to fish in to me, but then again, I've never tried it, so I could be dead wrong.

Not a good idea in Florida, too many big gators in our fresh waters, and the occasional python!

I like the way you think. I've fished from a float tube as a kid. A couple of things come to mind. They are wet and on many of them, the seat is in the water. If you add waders to keep you dry, there is much more to carry in. How would you tote the tube in? They can get rather bulky with compartments on some models.

1. too deep, too big
2. no gators, no snake, not applicable, no help..hahahha..
3. hike it in.

I just shopped Cabela's and picked out what I would buy. The weight of the tube, fins, rod holder, and pump is reported to be 16lbs. So a rod, tackle, lunch, water, and pfd should keep everything below 25lbs. That's not bad for a 1/2 mile hike up a mountain. The dimensions of the tube packed is 15"x10"x8", I doubt I could pack it that small for the trip back down the mountain. lo  I think it sounds like a great plan though! ~c~

25 pounds and a half mile!  That's a young man's game for sure! :-*
