Clearlake CA was full of knuckleheads yesterday.

first.  there were 5 teens armed with their own hyper fast jet skis.  they were like a swarm of hornets.  buzzing us.  I think a bass boat guy talked to them because they seemed to move out into the main lake after awhile.

and when me and another kayaker called it a day, we headed back and had to pass the dock with the jet ski kids.  they all shut off when we got near, and avoided eye contact.  hahaha..but what happened next was unbelievable.

a wake boat was coming towards us.  I waved my paddle at her.  she holds up her hand towards us, indicating..."just passing thru!"..and she waved at the jet ski kids too...and she goes between us!!!  she went between me and shore!!  she passed me at 30 feet.  I goosed it on the pedal drive and aimed my nose at the upcoming wave.  it swamped me. my kayak dug in nose first.  it drained fast and I didnt sink.  I had the mental capacity to flip her off, and yell my best FU.  hahah..all the males in the back of the boat looked at their feet.

I love my HOBIE.  it is ocean rated...and that wake boat brought on an epic wave.  If I was tail towards the wake, I could have started kicking and surfed that thing with my kayak.

just once I would love a sheriff to see something like this.

Capt. BassinLou

As comedian Ron White said, "You can't fix stupid." Lol!!

Fortunately, they didn't flip you over.

Yeah, kind of why I sold my little kayak. The local jerk-skis see you as a target and think they own and run the water.

I know if I buy a bass boat, I will understand the kayaker for sure.

Nothing worse then a parent buying these water sport vehicles and giving kids the keys without any ground rules, or restrictions.  My neighbor gave his teen daughter a powerful one, and she ran out of gas in the ocean first time she took it out.  She was at drift for hours before being found.  At least she now knows to look at the gas gage once in a while.  Stupidity will prevail everytime, especially with young ones. :(  ???  :(

just a dumb idea:  why spear the wake when you could parallel it and ride it up and over?

assuming it wasn't a 'breaker'?

and I am very circumspectly avoiding sharing my personal thoughts on wake boats...  but I wonder:  in a world where we are all taught that we are responsible for our wakes, what level of fiscal responsibility do the manufacturers have?  equipment damage, shoreline erosion... ?

it's a bit like putting loaded guns into the hands of 5 year old kids...  IMO...

I think going over sideways would have tipped me.  can't be sure, just a theory.  not one I'm willing to test with my gear on board.  with dummy weights on the boat (like rocks) to mimic a full load, heck yea.  I'd ride a deep ballasted wake boat wake sideways for science.  might be fun.

used to row long boats in college (approx 60 feet).  limited freeboard.  zero flotation.

used the oars to stabilize on the 'up and over' all the time.  taking wakes perpendicular was just gonna swamp us.

the kayaks out there, with the paddles, ought to be very easy to handle stuff.
