How much do you think that social media, positive or negative, has helped or hurt Bass Fishing.

seems like, opinions are like AHoles, everyone has one, and they pretty much all stink.

the point of my question is -- do you think it is causing a division within the sport even more than livescope has?  All based off people's opinions?

try to take the LS out -- other topics -- like johnstons, Trey M, all the latest crappola.

I see it as detrimental....and people are enticed to make catchier opinions, which exacerbates the issue.  What say you?

not me.  I try to see the positives.

social media got me (back) into bass fishing.  (that and covid).  I just take what I need out of it and (really try) to ignore the BS.  take this forum for example, and others like it.  people share tips, ideas, and become real friends sometimes.

EVERY aspect of life, at least my life as A-holes in it.  can't be helped.  road rage, Internet forum rage, YouTube rage., vaccine rage!!  yes, we had vaccine rage.  it all sucks and I choose not to get involved with any of it. I sometimes fail.  working progress I suppose.

I don't think it is what is happening on the internet that is causing the big riff or divide.  I can't say what I think it is without breaking forum rules.  it has become acceptable to be rude and a dick.  even name calling is going mainstream.  labeling people.  yuck!!

i like your perspective and agree.  I guess I dont see a lot of people having the same opinion and latching on to the "rage" (great way to put it by the way).

i try to do the same -- most of it is a time waste anyway IMO.  And, I say that to say this -- everyone can say what they want -- this is fine.

For me personally, social media has been a huge benefit for my fishing. I have made so many friends, learned so much and had a chance to go fishing in places I never would have without it.

As for the back-biting, controversy and gossip; that was happening before. Social media has just amplified it.

I take the bad with the good.

for certain there has been a whole helluva lot of good coming out of it.  Some super hammer sticks out there teaching us weekend warriors a thing or ten.

and perhaps that is it, now it is just amplified, and with the ability for everyone to add/detract or misinterpret the message.  Keyboard warriors are definitely a part of it too.

cant blame anyone for saying the things they want to say, no issue with that -- its what makes the US what it is.

I don't really get on social media much. I just made a Facebook account that I don't know how to use. I only made it because one of the trails my son is going to fish communicates with the anglers/captains that way. I also have an Instagram account that I rarely ever post anything on. I follow a few pro anglers, tackle companies, and some hunting stuff, and that's about it.

I have seen some (plenty) social media "pot-stirrers" though. These "content creators" have figured out that flies swarm to crap. Same on YouTube unfortunately. People figured out that they get way more clicks if they say something controversial or put up a title that's clickbait. Usually there's very little actual "content" there, just drama or the intention to create some drama. For that reason there are several YouTubers that I refuse to watch videos from, and some Instagrammers that I no longer follow.

It's what I like about you Joe- your sense of humor...

You know, I can be labeled a hypocrite easily here. I do this forum. I do Facebook (although not like a lot of folks 'cuz I don't peruse and comment and spy on everything). I have Facebook because of my business and everything goes from there.

So, to the point. I think social media, like the world-wide Interweb, has good points. However I also see evil. I see it bring out the worst in folks, so many that seem to thrive on confrontation. I don't dig the drama. And I try hard to not be a hypocrite.

Being 44yrs old, I think I'm the youngest active member here. So I can give you a liitle "younger perspective" (For the record, I'm the last of GenX, not a Millenial).

Since our generation created the internet amd social media, we have seen the younger generations become more and more dependent on them over actual socialization. With EVERYTHING having an App, they now have become accustomed to "Instant Gratification". Push one button and BOOM, instant results of what they want or need. From clothes, to food, to movies and even transportation. The positive side is no more hours of searching and reading. Everything is right at your fingertips. IE: "Hey Google/Siri, what color bait works best on Lake X in stained water?" And you will have an instant answer. The downside of it all, this means less and less traffic on forums/message boards like here. Their thoughts are "Why spend hours researching when I can have it now?"

Now as for social media and, lets use our sport in example, fishing. You will always have what we call "Clout Chasers". These are the younger kids who post up the most absurd or pointless videos/posts, in an attempt to gain them attention. This is where the "A-pipes" (insert human anatomy here, ao think we know which one..) come from. They start to compete in who can be the most obnoxious in hope of seeing who can get more followers. This in turn causes more harm to our sport as they only care about clout/fame and not about our sport.

But I bring hope too. There are still some that get into our hobby thanks to social media as it's all they have to access information. Some kid sees a video, let's use Capt Lou as our example here, from a member and says "Hey, look at that nice fish! I want to try that in my canal/pond/lake." And then they go and but whatever rod/reel/line/tackle/etc that they saw you use. This in turn helps the shops and tackle industries.

In short: Social Media can both help or hurt, it alk depends on what content is being made available for the ones seeking it.

I think, from about 15 minutes on of this video are some great points:

perfect? no.  but there are some underlying messages i agree with from CapnRon mostly.  Ben had some valid points too.

take the personality out and listen to the messages IMO
