So, a friend of mine is telling me that I need to shut off my front sonar every time I pull up the trolling motor to move. He showed me an article that states that it is hard on the puck to leave it on out of the water. Now I shut it off when I am done for the day obviously but I leave it on when changing locations which is what 20- 30 mins max and most often under 5 mins usually. I don't believe I know anyone that does this. Am I wrong ? What do you all do?

I've never done it in all the years fishing.  I don't remember reading it in the instructions either, but I'm sure I didn't read all the instructions either.  I'd like to see that article.

I didn't read all the article either but I will see if he can send it to me real quick.

The argument is that the puck or built in transducer could overheat shortening it's lifespan.  I don't turn it off until the end of the day.  I'm not usually moving for that long of a distance, and it's getting air cooling from the wind going down the lake...

If I'm not mistaken, most newer units turn the transducer off or at least account for it being out of water when it senses it. It would be silly for a manufacturer in this day and age to not build the product to survive the normal usage it receives.

I've read and heard stories of oil leaking from transducers that might support argument for turning it off. I suspect a transducer might have to be out of the water for a long time in very hot sunlight. Regardless, I've sort of gotten in the habit turning off the front sonar when I pull the Ultrex up, but I don't panic if I forget.
