I lost a fishing friend on Monday. His loss was reported on his sisters Facebook page, but with no details as to what had happened. On his FB page, other comments told what was known at that time. He and another fellow were in a jon boat and involved in an accident with a center console boat. The other fellow is alive and in stable condition. The other boater also was not hurt apparently.

The fellow who was killed, Daniel Siebert, was like most here, a friend who I had only known from various online sources, primarily a Fishing in MD group on Facebook. Still, I considered him a good friend and a very tragic loss.

He was like most here on Ultimatebass, the kind of guy who fished often enough and gladly passed on what he learned to others and since we both had fished extensively in MD shared a lot of information with folks fishing in MD. He often took folks fishing with him that might not otherwise have had the opportunity to go. There's many folks who will miss him as he was a great guy & well liked too.

The accident is still under investigation, but is a good reminder to pay attention and be as safe as you can out on the water. According to that news report, that would have happened around dark, which anytime limited visibility happens it increases the chances for such an accident.

That part of the Susquehanna can get a lot of boat activity at times but on a Monday evening, probably wasn't a lot of boats out and perhaps some complacency may have contributed. :(

Boaters need to pay attention to what they are doing. This is just terrible a senseless loss of life.

Very sorry, Jim. I've read a few reports, one that suggested the crash happened near or under a train trestle and not wearing a PFD. A reminder to always slow down and proceed with caution when passing under bridges and other structures.

Joe, I don't believe that Daniel was a member of UB.

It's still not known as far as I've heard, what exactly happened. I don't know if both boats were moving, or if one had been sitting still.

At the time, it is said to have happened, it would have been dark, and it's not known if the boats involved had their lights on.

Hopefully, the investigation by the MD Natural Resources Police will answer all these questions, and perhaps others will take heed.

Daniel liked chasing the Striped Bass in the river and the bridge pilings are popular areas for anglers looking for the Stripers as well as LM & SM bass.

The Susquehanna is quite wide at that point, and really tragic that an accident like that has happened where they could have easily passed one another with plenty of room.

Thanks guys for the comments. This was the type of man, who was a friend like you guys are my friends. I've never met any of you personally, face to face, but that doesn't change it.

Smallie, I think he was the type of guy that would have fit in here on UB very well, and I agree with you.

What a terrible thing to happen and probably because they faster boat wasn't paying attention.

Sorry for your loss Jim, even an online friend is still a friend.

Mike, Thank you!

In this case, it was also reported to have been a bigger boat, but the details have not been released yet as to who may have been at fault. I have read that it was a head on crash, but no where else has that been verified that I've seen.

Losing a life is always a terrible thing, even when we don't know those involved. :(

Dan's blood alchohol ranged from .12 to .17 (.08 is legaly drunk) depending  where it was drawn from.  Dan was also on the  wrong side of the channel, in a confined space.  Dan was also filming with his cell phone at the approximate time of his T Boning the other, 30 foot, boat on its starboard side about 10 to 12 feet from its bow, tearing his trolling motor off its mount and turning it into a missile.  As it turns out empty beer cans were strewn on the floor of Dan's boat and his vehicle at Lapidum boat ramp, according to the MD. DNR police.

This is truly unfortunate.
