I broke out the old digital scale to get some weights on some of the Dobyn rods I have. I have some duplicates that I measured to see any differences. Keep in mind epoxy and so on contributes to the minor differences I assume. All casting except one spinning in the Fury Series.

Sierra 704 micro 4.48 oz
Champ 734 4.73 oz
Fury 705CB 4.44 oz
Sierra 704 4.97 oz
Sierra 734 5.29 oz
Champ 704 4.62oz
Fury 703 4.55oz
Fury 704 5.19
Sierra 733 4.73 oz
Fury 703 spinning 4.76 oz
Sierra 735 5.47oz
Champ 703 4.44 oz
Champ 734 4.62  oz

I weighed some rods back a few years ago including Extremes and Xtasys but for the life of me I can't find the information.

I thought it be interesting.

It is interesting. I'm curious to see how much difference if any there might be between 2 identical rod models.

If I can find a way to dig out my digital postal scale I'm gonna put my 2  Sierra 734 C rods on there and see what comes up.

As you mentioned, differences in epoxy and other things can make a difference.

I'm sure it will be negligible at best but it's still something I'm curious about.

What I find really interesting is that a heavier rod that is well balanced will "feel" lighter than an actual lighter rod that isn't balanced well.

Balance before weight every time. I will never understand the big deal about having the lightest rod. It's not like you're swinging a framing hammer all day.🥴

I agree with balance before weight.

A couple of exceptions to me would be:

I remember the days even after graphite rods became big, when cranking rods were HEAVY fiberglass. They could wear you out after a few hours even if they were balanced well.

Also, certain health conditions can have an impact. Arthritis for one. Shoulder, elbow or wrist problems too.

I used to be able to cast, flip, pitch whatever with either arm/hand. Then in '98 I completely crushed my left shoulder. I also broke my arm and tore the rotator cuff off on both ends and lost 15% of the mobility in that arm. After that I couldn't fish with a lot of my rods on that side.

Things have come a long way in materials and wrapping techniques etc since then so these days it is far less of an issue for the average angler. An extra ounce or two, or fractions of an ounce shouldn't really be noticable.

Balance before weight.
