If your targeting peacocks you need to modify your lures right out of the box.

I just purchased a couple of new jerkbaits, and 2 things I do right away is modify the hooks and split rings.
(THESE ARE NON-MODIFIED PICS)

Why? Keep in mind most lures we buy for peacock fishing are made for largemouth bass.
Yes the hooks out of the box maybe sticky, and the split rings are ok at best.

But when it comes to peacocks hooks and split rings will be destroyed quickly when the peacock bite is hot!!

Modifying those treble hooks with stronger treble hooks and swapping out those split rings with thicker ones will minimize one's chances of losing nice peacocks.

Will the action of the lure change? Slightly at best. The key is to match the thicker hardware as close to the stock sizes.

Hopefully these two tips helps some of you out.

Def a Must Do!! Pound for pound so much more powerful jaws/strength than a Largemouth. It's like for saltwater have to change out the freshwater hardware for them too!

Can you spot the difference??

Stock right out of the box

Modified with new split rings and hooks

As I mentioned I went ahead and modified the hooks and split rings.

Check out this change!!

Stock is on the left. Beefier hook and split ring on right.

Closer look of the split ring difference.

End result

It may not look like much, but trust me. A prolonged peacock fight would have destroyed the stock split ring and mangled the hook.

I'm not saying that the modified hooks won't be damaged either, but they will last a bit longer.

The modified split rings on the other hand are very TOUGH!

Until I started painting lures I didn't even know there were options for o-rings! So now yeah its nice to add a stronger one or larger diameter one as needed! Seems like most bass lures have 20lb ratings which unfortunately would fail if we managed to hook the world record bass...

Don't fish for peas, won't last long here, but even if the stock hooks are I'd switch to triple grips, they are just so much stickier.
