I have a 714 and I like it. I've heard that the tip on the 744 isn't as fast as the 714. I like the idea of the 744 not being as fast as the 714.
Can anyone tell me the differences between the 714 and 744 other than length?

3 inches in length does slow the tip down. It's still a 4 power rod but you'll have to move the rod more to get into the back bone. This allows for more loading of the tip during casts, pitching or even hooksets.

Thanks Mike. Your explanation was what I suspected about the 744 and I just needed/wanted someone to explain it in a way that I could better wrap my head around. I need another rod like I need a hole in the head, but you know how that goes. A 744 is at the top of my list for my next rod - like most folks right now, I'm a little more budget conscious than I've been in a while. Thanks again.

In every series I've fished with the 744 has been a very enjoyable rod. Yes I've turned into a VERY budget conscious angler  :'(

is this the same for all dobyns models? im interested in a 763c, but not sure the ratio of tip to backbone. would a 763c have the same backbone as a 703c but with a longer tip? or would it be the same tip with a longer backbone?

Mike Cork

Fish_Taco, this will see a little difference because of the 6 inches versus three. You will have the back bone of the 3 power but you're going to have significant tip action compared to the 703.
