How often should you do a software update your electronics? What is the normal process? I assume that all it takes is to pop out the SD Card and then plug it into the laptop, go to the website and then update the card. Is it that simple?

I do updates as soon as they are released.
The software with instructions is on the Humminbird website==READ all of it.
The software is unit model specific, you match the software download to the exact full name of the unit as shown in the SYSTEM STATUS view.

I update when a new release comes out,  but I like to control the upgrade myself.  I am not that familiar with the newer Humminbirds or Garmins,  but my Lowrance units have been a snap.  I just power one up,  connect it to my wireless access point, and it will look online for the correct updates.  I can then choose whether I want to upgrade it or not.  One the upgrade is complete,  I move to the next unit.

Since I store my boat at the lake, I save the update on an SD card and take it with me.  Pop it in the Lowrance and it is pretty much automatic from there....

Do I hook the laptop up to my unit or pop out the SD card and plug that into my computer?

Upload to a SD card, then put SD card into the unit. The unit will upload the SD card.

Upload to a SD card, then put SD card into the unit. TTemps it will upload the SD card.

You will need a blank 32 gig SD card.  Most units don't like cards bigger than that.

For my birds I download the update to the SD card.  Power on the unit and restore to factory settings, power the unit off. Now insert the SD card into the slot.  Power the unit on it does the update for you.

That was oversimplified,  but you get the intent.  Your units website will have detailed info.

SD or micro SD cards?
Rodney

Use the size card that your unit's card reader is. If you have multiple units with different card reader sizes, get the microSD with a SD adapter. Some of my Humminbird units have microSD readers and some have SD readers.

Do you update your Lowrance totally online or do you need to insert a card?
